Pavlik reports threat from man accused in beating

Published:Wednesday, July 2, 2008

The world champion boxer said he filed the police report out of concern for his family.

Staff Report

BOARDMAN — Fearing for the safety of his fianc e and daughter, Kelly Pavlik told police Monday about alleged threats by a former associate.

The Mahoning Valley middleweight boxing champion filed a police report saying that some of his associates informed him that former co-manager Anthony Scandy of Poland had threatened that he would “get Kelly” before the man goes to jail.

“I basically did it because of my daughter,” Pavlik, 26, told The Vindicator of why he filed the report. “I could have filed a restraining order, but I haven’t done anything like that.”

Pavlik indicated that he filed the report so that people would be aware of the threats. He hasn’t heard any of the threats personally.

Pavlik told police that Scandy, who believes that Pavlik owes him more money from their contract, sued him.

“It’s all secondhand and hearsay,” Pavlik said. “I can’t say much more than that for legal reasons. He probably did it because he knows he ain’t got a chance” in his lawsuit.

The boxer indicated that he didn’t want a lot of attention regarding the issue. “I don’t want this to get too pumped up,” Pavlik said.

Scandy, 38, of Calla Road, Poland, couldn’t be reached.

Scandy was arraigned Tuesday in Campbell Municipal Court in the June 24 beating of Seth Leach, 32, of Austintown.

The boxer told police that Scandy told one man that he was going to shoot Pavlik in both of his hands so that he can’t fight anymore.

Pavlik said he is apprehensive and believes the suspect is capable of carrying out his threats.

Scandy, charged with kidnapping, aggravated burglary and felonious assault in the Campbell case, was freed on $2,500 cash bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 5.

He is one of seven men facing the same charges as a result of the episode, in which the victim was bound hand and feet with duct tape and beaten and kicked. The assault occurred at 342 Blossom Ave., Campbell.

Leach spent several days in St. Elizabeth Health Center recovering from injuries that include a jaw broken in two places, cuts on his face and around his eyes, and bruises on the rest of his body.

Last year, Pavlik filed a lawsuit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court against Scandy. The suit is still pending with a trial date set for January.

Pavlik said Tuesday that he hasn’t spoken to Scandy since filing the lawsuit and has no idea why he would be making threats now.

In the 2007 civil suit, Pavlik asked the court to uphold the three-year contract among him, Scandy and another manager that expired May 12, 2007, and to prevent Scandy “from bringing any action against Pavlik for any claimed obligations” beyond that date.

No charges have been filed from Pavlik’s allegation of menacing, but police are investigating.

In 2005, Scandy stipulated to a probation violation in Mahoning County Court in Austintown and was ordered to spend 20 days under house arrest, court records show. That probation violation stemmed from a 2003 assault of which he was convicted and ordered to spend 10 days in the Mahoning County jail and given probation, according to court records.

Last year in Mahoning County Court in Boardman, Scandy pleaded guilty to and was convicted of domestic violence. He was ordered to pay $165 in fines and court costs.

Your paper neglected to report that all charges against Anthony Scandy were dropped yesterday afternoon because the injured man provided a sworn statement that he not only did not participate in the assault, he actually helped the man. Apparently that's not sensational enough to be reported, because surely the Vindicator would not be that behind on the news.

Kelly Pavlik sure was quick to jump on the bandwagon. No personal agenda there, right? All of a sudden, yesterday he became so concerned that he went to the police. What timing!

Kelly Pavlik was nobody when Anthony Scandy believed in him! Anthony Scandy should be looked at as a hero by Pavlik. He gave him money and paid his medical bills. Instead, Kelly and his entourage suck up the prize money and leave Anthony Scandy behind. I saw the contract! Scandy should receive the rewards from all fights except possibly the last one.

As for the police charges, the only thing Kelly needs to be afraid of about Anthony Scandy is Scandy's lawyer. Kelly will need to pay up at some point! Scandy should file slander charges against Pavlik.

I am a seeker of the truth! I really wish the media would follow up and tell the final truth when a man is accused of something he didn't partake in. ALL CHARGES WERE DROPPED! Scandy protected the victim in last week's beating. The victim testified in a report. Scandy will be witnessing about the event.

When you see Kelly Pavlik, tell him to "PAY THE DOG BREEDER!" Then he won't have to be afraid to see Anthony Scandy! Scandy was a friend to Pavlik. It is Pavlik who turned his back and didn't live up to his signature on a valid contract.

Note To Kelly Pavlik:

I am happy for your success and what it has brought to the Youngstown area. Now, you should pay Anthony Scandy and help make us Mahoning Valley residents look like the good people that we all are. We are not the thugs from the valley's past. We are positive thinking, innovative people that pay our bills! We want a good reputation here!

Who cares about Kelly Pavlik? This is a non-story.

Funny thing, I read the vindy article and Pavlik says "its all second hand and hearsay", and then on WKBN you see "The Ghost told police he has received saveral threats from Anthony Scandy, including calls, which say he will shoot Pavlik in both of his hands."

Which is it?

How convenient. Kelly doesn't want to pay an old friend the money he owes and so he decides to get his two cents in when he sees another situation about Anthony arises. Funny, he's got enough money to be seen drunk around the town but fails to pay what the contract stated. What a role model Mr. Pavlik. You should be so proud of yourself.

You need to get your facts straight before you start throwing around accusations. first off yes, scandy was kellys so called manager back in the day when kelly was just starting out, but he did nothing to promote him, what scandy did was give him a 500 dollar cadilac which broke down on a daily basis, and gave him some chump change to get by with. Scandy is a scumbag. who saw a chance to take advantage of a poor kid. many warned kelly not to get involved with him. and now that kelly has made a name for himself, and bettered himself , scandy wants something. tell me, what kind of manager, business person would be involved in a mob like beating in campbell. and than threaten kelly. oh yeah hes some kind of hero. only in the eyes of his same kind

Scandy is nothing but a bag of crap and so is anonymous.

Kelly Pavlik is a kind hearted individual who has alway loved people and donated his time and efforts to people-even before he was famous. It is out of character for him to be dishonest and withhold money from someone that he rightfully owes. Totally out of character for him.

Then there are people who say Scandy is a scumbag and others who say that he was a friend to Kelly who helped him tremendously.

Lets just let the courts decide if the money is owed instead of making personal attacks on either one of these gentleman.

What is amazing to me is that people still get so riled up by what the media present us with. People take what is printed as the gospel. When will we ever learn?

here is some advice to those who believe everything that the media feeds them

NEVER BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU HEAR...AND ONLY HALF OF WHAT YOU SEE!

The Vindicator must have an editor whose sole job is to make sure that Kelly Pavlik and Jim Graham have articles printed about them each day. I'm sick of hearing about Pavlik whose only skill is beating people senseless and Graham and his whiney auto workers. A lot of peple in this area worl other places than GM. Give it a rest.
