Counting your blessings, even after the holidays
This time of year, children often go to bed with thoughts of Santa — even after Christmas is over.
Their thoughts now move toward what they’ll encounter in the coming new year. Sadly, many children don’t even have a bed to call their own, often sleeping on the floor, couches or shared beds.
Our group of OSU Extension Master Gardener Volunteers not only have many projects offered to the gardening public but are ready to share our generosity.
This year our group chose the Sleep In Heavenly Peace organization as our holiday donation project. We chose to collect bedding to accompany the beds that this organization builds for children. This included sheets, pillows and comforters that apply to the needs of all ages.
I’d like to give a shout-out to this wonderful organization.
Sleep In Heavenly Peace is a nonprofit dedicated to providing beds for children in need. This is a nationwide organization with a chapter in Youngstown that builds and delivers beds to children ages 3-17.
Their motto is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.” Their goal is to ensure every child has a safe and comfortable place to spend their night. They have shown that:
● Physical health is met by reducing health risks and sleep-related accidents.
● Mental health improves by promoting a better mood, reducing anxiety and improving cognitive functioning.
● Academic performance is increased by enhancing focus, concentration and overall school performance.
The Youngstown chapter has a website where you can sign up not only to donate bedding but also to find a day and location where you can sign up to attend one of their build-a-bed events. So, gather up your hammers or shoppers to assist this great group.
Many wonderful organizations in our community volunteer their time to make life easier for those in need not only during the holidays but year-round.
I’m happy that our group was able to lend a hand to make a child’s life a little better, especially during the holiday season. I’m very proud of our Master Gardener family who never fails to step up to help the less fortunate and to live in a community that has always tried to better the lives of its residents.
As we enter the new year, take the time to think of others before we think of ourselves and spring planting!
