Youngstown amp announces community events
Wine and Jazz, Party on the Lawn among shows
The return of Youngstown Wine and Jazz and a free concert by one of the U.S. military bands are among the shows announced Wednesday as part of the 2023 Premier Bank Community Event Series at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre.
Six events are on the schedule, including two more Party on the Lawn concerts on June 2 featuring Relapse and July 7 with Larry Elefante. The series kicked off earlier this month with RDNA along with other activities in downtown Youngstown for Cinco de Mayo.
According to Jordan Ryan, executive director of the amphitheater and Wean Park, “We are happy to open the gates of the amphitheater to the largest local audience possible and we know events like these help us to do that.”
One of the new attractions is a free concert featuring the U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers Chorus on June 27. The Concert Band & Soldiers’ Chorus are the oldest and largest of The U.S. Army Field Band’s performing components.
Founded in 1946 and 1957 respectively, these two ensembles combine to present joint concerts on their national tours. They have performed in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling hundreds of millions.
The series concludes with the Ohio Nonviolence Week parade from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 1.
Admission is free for those four announced events. The other two shows on the schedule are ticketed events.
Performers for Youngstown Wine and Jazz on July 8 will include Alexander Zonjic, James Lloyd and Jessy J.
Zonjic is a Canadian-born flautist now based in Detroit and a 15-time Detroit Music Awards winner. His latest album, “Playing It Forward,” was produced by Jeff Lorber with the exception of the lead single, “Motor City Sway,” which was written and produced by Lloyd.
Keyboard player James Lloyd of Canfield is a founding member of Pieces of a Dream and has written and / or produced songs for Najee, Nestor Torres, Walter Beasley, Eric Darius, Wayman Tisdale and many others.
Saxophonist Jessy J has recorded with Michael Buble and Robin Thicke and toured with such artists as Anita Baker, Jeff Lorber, Gerald Albright and Peter White.
The Night Out for Neighborhoods on Aug. 24 will be a fundraiser for local neighborhood watch programs and will feature a performer to be announced.
According to Derrick McDowell, Wean Park’s community engagement and inclusion coordinator, “Year after year, as this event series continues to appreciate in its value, I am confident that it will provide the much-needed sense of belonging to the residents of this beautiful city of Youngstown.”
