TubaChristmas brings brassy carols to Stambaugh
Tuba and sousaphone players will fill Stambaugh Auditorium with holiday music Sunday for TubaChristmas.
This is the eighth year for TubaChristmas at Stambaugh and the 51st year for the tradition nationwide that was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor, William J. Bell, who was born on Christmas Day. Tuba and sousaphone players performed special arrangements of Christmas carols at New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink, and the tradition has spread internationally.
The Youngstown concert has attracted close to 100 participants in past years. For musicians interested in participating this year, registration starts at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium, followed by a rehearsal from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Music stands and chairs will be provided. The cost for participants is $10 and includes a commemorative button. More information is available at experienceyourarts.org.
For the public, the concert starts at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free, but a free will offering will be collected to offset costs. TubaChristmas merchandise also will be available for purchase.
A Holiday Craft Show featuring local crafters and vendors is scheduled Sunday starting at 11 a.m. in Stambaugh’s Jeanne D. Tyler Grand Ballroom and will be open after the concert. Concessions will be available for purchase.
