‘FIVE Squared’ gets ‘PostScript’ at Y
“FIVE Squared” is getting a “PostScript” at the Davis Family YMCA.
For a decade the “FIVE Squared” art show funded the Boardman Y’s ARTreach program, which provides art classes and supplies to underserved people in the community.
Suzanne Gray, arts and humanities coordinator, said they decided to retire the concept with the 2024 show.
Artists donated original works that measured 5 inches by 5 inches. All works sold for $25 and were hung anonymously. Buyers didn’t know until they made their purchase whether their choice was created by a well-known artist whose work regularly sells for far more or a novice submitting the first piece they’d ever created.
“We knocked around a few ideas,” Gray said. “Originally we were calling it FSPS, as in a postscript to FIVE Squared. OK, this will be a postscript and after FIVE Squared, but we didn’t want it to be the same thing of people just donating little art.”
“PostScript” does feature some small works. More than 20 artists donated postcard-sized works measuring 4 inches by 6 inches, but the creator will be identified and the prices will vary. The YMCA will get the full purchase price.
But it also includes a juried art show with submission for nearly 40 artists.
“For the larger pieces, we have stained glass, we have some sculpture, we have photos, and every kind of medium in painting,” Gray said.
Many of those works will be for sale as well, with the artist receiving 75% of the purchase price and the YMCA receiving a 25% commission.
Artists who are featured in the juried show, who submitted postcard-sized art donations or both are: Diane Beatty, Daniel C. Boyer, Penny Chevront, John Fire, Elizabeth A. Ford, Edd Fowler, Mary Grace Fowler, Lisa Frederick, Nicholas Galipo, Angela Garner, Suzanne Bort Gray, Karen Henry, Amy Joachim, Allison Johnson, Tami Johnson, Shaq Jones, Christi Kacvinsky, George Kocar, Ray Laret, Sheri Liebschner, Beth Lowe, Linda Mikula, Judith Morris, Karen Nelson, Rosalie Nemeth, Brad Pipoly, Lynne Provance, Carolyn Riggins, Kristina Rule, Alice Rzonsa, Dorothy Schill, Penelope Senyak, Renee Sheakoski, Guy Shively, Judith Smith, Erin St. Clair, Cy Svagerko, Robert Tupaj, Linda Vasconi, Peter Wachter, Jim Young and Marilyn Yurko.
