Oakland announces auditions for first Warren production

WARREN — The Oakland Center for the Arts Kids First children’s theater will have auditions Tuesday for a production of Disney’s “Beauty & the Beast Jr.”

The show is open to students ages 8 to 18, particularly high school students and boys necessary for the lead roles.

Those auditioning should come prepared to sing a song from the show or in the Broadway style. Auditions will start at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at First United Church of Christ, 280 E. Market St., Warren. Last month parishioners at the downtown church gave their building with a distinctive gold dome to the theater company for $1.

The Oakland won’t take full possession of the building until October, but it will be used for auditions and for rehearsals.

Performances of “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” will be staged at Warren G. Harding High School in late February.

The Oakland also plans to stage “The Lion King” and “Mean Girls” for its inaugural season in Warren. Students who participate in “Beauty and the Beast” will be given special consideration for those subsequent productions.

Kids First does not charge youths to be in its productions.

Participants will help pick next season’s show and learn the different jobs required for staging live theater. A graduating senior each year will receive a scholarship from proceeds raised from the David El’Hatton Scholarship Spaghetti Dinner.
