YSO plays Beethoven, Cherubini at Stambaugh
The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra will play one of Ludwig van Beethoven’s symphonies and two works by one of his favorite composers at Stambaugh Auditorium.
The “Beethoven & Beyond” concert will open with two works by Luigi Cherubini — the Overture from L’hôtellerie portugaise (The Portuguese Inn) and his Symphony in D Major.
Cherubini (1760-1842) has been described as a friend and rival of Beethoven, who described Cherubini as the best living composer during his lifetime. Some music historians and critics argue that Cherubini’s influence on Beethoven can be heard in such works as his Symphony No. 5.
Following the intermission will be Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 (Eroica), which was considered boundary-breaking when it debuted in 1805 in Vienna.
Guest conductor will be Erik Ochsner, although no one has led the Youngstown orchestra more since the death of Music Director and Conductor Randall Craig Fleischer in 2020. Ochsner conducted the orchestra for its film screenings since 2022 (“Ghostbusters,” “Home Alone” and “Back to the Future”) and he also has conducted masterworks concerts and last April’s pops concert with The Vindys.
Ochsner attended The Pierre Monteux School, is a graduate of Dartmouth College and is a proud Finnish-American dual citizen. He is considered by audiences and critics alike to be one of the leading film-with-live-orchestra conductors due to his energy, attention to detail and precise synchronization.
He is quoted in the press release for the concert that, “I really am excited to perform Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 3 with the wonderful musicians of the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. I have always been passionate about bringing new pieces of music to both audience members and musicians alike, like last year’s ‘Unknown and Gorgeous: River and Iron’ concert. This will be the very first time that the YSO will play any music by Italian composer Luigi Cherubini.”
The concert starts at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave., Youngstown. Tickets range from $20 to $60, including ticket fees, and are available at the DeYor Performing Arts Center box office, online at experienceyourarts.org and by calling 330-259-9651.
