ACTS gets a little bloody with production of ‘Sweeney Todd’
The Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical “Sweeney Todd” opens Friday for a three-weekend run at ACTS Performing Arts Center.
The musical about a barber out for vengeance after being falsely imprisoned and a woman who sells “the worst pies in London” providing him with a convenient way to dispose of his victims, won eight Tony Awards, including best new musical, in its original 1979-80 Broadway run.
It’s enjoyed three Broadway revivals, most recently in 2023-24.
Ron Sinesio is the director and Joe Spurio is the music director of the ACTS production, which uses the theater’s 16-foot-by-16-foot LED screen to transport audiences to the musical’s 19th-century London setting.
The cast includes Tom Perman, Sara Campbell, Melina Liszka, Kory Frederick, Alan Anderson, Drew Ference, Thomas Morelli, Brian Shumaker, Amy Javens, John Woge, Noah Gatto, Ryan Bedi, Analia Boyd, Gerri Jenkins, Madison Lazor, Jeanne Patterson, Susan Piccirilli, Cole Plotner, David Reeher, Christina Russo, Jen Stephenson, Miranda Woge, Susan Woge and Jack Dolinger.
The production also will include a “local celebrity” appearance in each performance. Guests will include Gerry Ricciutti, WKBN news reporter, on Friday; David George, president of Joy Cone Company, on Saturday; Carmen Aiello, executive director of Visit Mercer County, on Sunday; Tom Roberts, CEO of Rhys and Associates LLC, on April 4; Kris Chapman, leader singer of Juvenile Characteristics, on April 5; Dr. John Cox, president of Youngstown Playhouse Board of Directors, on April 6; Jim Fogarty, principal and chief content creator at 2 Ticks & The Dog Productions on April 11; and Jim Bombeck, executive director of Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce, on April 12.
“Sweeney Todd” will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday through April 12 at ACTS, 40 S. Irvine Ave., Sharon, Pa. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for students and are available online at actspac.org and by calling 724-815-4388.
