Area acts sing ‘Ohio’s Greatest Hits’ for 330 Day

In an era when anyone can go online and find out in advance what songs their favorite artists are performing in concert, Ryan Humbert wants to maintain the element of surprise.

Humbert is the organizer and one of the performers for The Summit’s annual 330 Day Concert, which will take place Sunday at the Akron Civic Theatre.

The concert always has the same purpose — to showcase local artists, primarily those played regularly on the Akron-based public radio station (which is simulcast on WKTL-FM (90.7) in Struthers — and falls on the same date, March 30 (3 / 30), in honor of the area code for Akron and the Mahoning Valley.

But it’s taken different formats over the years, from featuring abbreviated sets from a handful of acts with local roots to having 33 different artists each play one song.

This year’s show is “Ohio’s Greatest Hits” which will feature 21 northeast Ohio singers backed by an 11-piece house band performing hits by such Ohio artists as Devo, The Black Keys, The James Gang, John Legend, Walk the Moon, The Pretenders, Nine Inch Nails, Tracy Chapman and Michael Stanley.

It’s a similar concept to a show Humbert organized a decade ago at Music Box Supper Club in Cleveland in conjunction with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction week festivities.

“I never repeated that show, and this seemed like a great way to do it, to do it for 330 Day, tie in all these great singers and make it even bigger and better than we did at the Music Box,” Humbert said.

The singers on Sunday will include: Jackie Popovec (The Vindys), JD Eicher, Candace Campana, Alex Bevan, Anya Van Rose, Brian Lisik, Carlos Jones, Cody J. Martin, Don Dixon, Emily Bates (The Shootouts), Hannah Crandall (Truss), Jeff Klemm, Jeri Sapronetti, Katy Robinson, Lauren Brabson, Marc Lee Shannon, Michael Weber, Shanna Delaney (By Light We Loom), Tracey Thomas, Willis Gordon and Humbert.

Sam Getz, who originally was scheduled to perform, had to back out when his band, Welshly Arms, booked shows in Sweden that conflicted with the event.

They’ll be backed by a band featuring John Anthony (The Vindys) and Erin Vaughn on guitar, Kevin Martinez on bass, Tim Longfellow on keyboard, Dylan Gomez on drums, Justin Tibbs on saxophone and Mark Russo on trumpet with Klemm, Brabson, Humbert and Bates also contributing backing vocals.

Once Humbert, program director Brad Savage and music director Chad Miller picked the performers they wanted to participate this year, they sent them a list of about 60 possible songs for the concert.

“Within a half hour, almost everybody had claimed their song,” Humbert said. “There were a few people that I specifically said, ‘Hey, I would love it if you could do this song,’ but for the most part, people got to have their say. And the ones that we asked specifically, ‘Hey, could you do this song?,’ It was because it was such a good fit, and they immediately saw that as well.”

While Humbert is revealing who will be performing and some of the acts that will be covered, he’s keeping secret who will be singing what.

“We kind of want it to be a little bit more of a surprise,” Humbert said.

“I wanted this time to really feel like a big, full-scale concert. I really wanted it to feel high energy and fun. This is going to be a show that showcases a lot of great talent in the area and songs from some of the biggest names in the state of Ohio. It’s really unlike any of the other 330 Days we’ve ever done.”

One other way this year’s concert is different from the last time Akron Civic Theatre hosted the event in 2018 — it sold out weeks in advance. Tickets were free, but donations were requested for the Jim Chenot Attitude for Gratitude Scholarship Fund. Donations for the fund also will be collected at the door.

“It was a perfect storm this year,” Humbert said. “We’ve got the momentum of seven great concerts from The Summit before this for 330 Day. It’s a weekend. It’s a beautiful venue. It’s a great theme. It’s a great list of artists. I just think all those things played into helping us sell it out.”

For those who did get tickets, Humbert has a word of advice.

“If you’re coming to the show, make sure you stick around for the encore,” he said. “It’s going to be a blast.”
