Destinations sold out on Rascal Flatts’ ‘Highway’

Rascal Flatts didn’t get the farewell it planned, but the welcome back couldn’t be much better.

Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney announced last October that they were reuniting, and Saturday’s show at the Covelli Centre is one of many sold-out dates for the reunion.

The farewell tour planned in 2020 was scrapped due to COVID-19. At the time of that announcement, Rascal Flatts was one of the most successful groups in country history.

The trio had 17 number one country hits and sold more than 23 million albums. Its songs have been streamed more than 12 billion times. Its 40-plus awards include Grammy, CMA, ACM, CMT, People’s Choice and Billboard honors as well as stars on the Hollywood and Music City walks of fame.

Rascal Flatt’s first new music since reuniting is “I Dare You,” a collaboration with pop’s Jonas Brothers.

In the news release announcing the song’s debut on Jan. 31, DeMarcus said, “We’re so excited to kick off this next chapter of Rascal Flatts with this single, working with Kevin, Joe and Nick (Jonas) is such a blast, they’re class acts. I think this song fits perfectly into our catalogue while also showing off something new and exciting, and we can’t wait to share it with our fans on the road.”

The song already is in the top 40 on Billboard’s country and country airplay charts.

In an appearance on “Rob + Holly’s Friday Night Takeover,” DeMarcus said of the song, “I feel like it’s very much a Jonas Brothers chorus, but it has a little bit of a Country twist on it, and I think Dann (Huff, the song’s producer) was able to beautifully marry both styles together and I’m really proud of it.”

According to the setlists available on setlist.fm, Rascal Flatts has been ending the night with its cover of “Life Is a Highway,” which was a hit on both the pop and country charts. The group might never have recorded the song if it had followed DeMarcus’s first instinct.

The band was asked to record the song for the animated hit “Cars.” Pixar’s chief John Lasseter showed the band sketches of the talking cars that would be the film’s main characters, and DeMarcus said in that same radio interview, “I remember sitting there thinking, ‘God, this sounds like the worst thing ever.’ Talking cars, that’s a hard thing to wrap your head around.”

Their record label head encouraged them to reconsider.

Joining Rascal Flatts on the highway for this 21-city tour is Lauren Alaina, a runner-up on season 10 of “American Idol” whose hits include “Road Less Traveled” and “Like My Mother Does,” and Chris Lane, who topped the country airplay chart with “I Don’t Know About You” and “Big, Big Plans.”
