Man, 42, killed in Friday night South Side shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — A 42-year-old man was killed in a Friday night homicide at a home in the 2700 block of Griselda Avenue on the South Side. His name was not released.

The Youngstown Police Department issued a press release late Friday stating that officers were called to Griselda at 7:36 p.m. Friday for a person who was shot. Officers saw the man laying near the front doorway with multiple gunshot wounds to the body and began life-saving measures until the arrival of ambulance personnel.

“Unfortunately, the victim did not make it and was pronounced deceased,” the release states.

The Youngstown Police Department detective division, crime scene unit and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office were called to the scene to investigate.

“Evidence was collected and information gathered which will need to be processed,” the release stated.

Anyone with information about the killing is asked to call the Youngstown Police Department detective division at 330-742-8911 or Crime Stoppers at 330-746-2583. Tips remain anonymous, and a reward may be available, the release states.

This was the second homicide in the city this year with the first being the late Jan. 10 shooting death of Brandon Ogden, 27, who was found in the 2500 block of Ohio Avenue on the North Side after police were called there shortly after 11 p.m. Jan. 10 for a male that had been shot and a suspect who fled the scene.

Lake Milton police apprehended Jonathan S. Simmons, 29, later that night when he was pulled over for a traffic violation and officers learned Simmons was wanted by Youngstown police in the Ogden homicide. Simmons was jailed early Jan. 11.

Simmons is in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of $1 million bond. He was set for a preliminary hearing in Youngstown Municipal Court last week, but it was reset for 9:30 a.m. Thursday because the court was closed because of weather conditions last Tuesday, the day it was supposed to take place.

Starting at $2.99/week.
