Leadership group to launch a new training program

YOUNGSTOWN — Leadership Mahoning Valley plans Thursday to launch a new board training program — the On Board! Governance Academy.

Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of a nonprofit board of directors and what it takes to be an effective nonprofit board member.

The academy is designed for new and established board members and / or nonprofit leadership and will include content from Charitable University, a new learning platform developed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office that provides tools on important elements in leading a charitable organization — board governance, governmental filings, financial operations and internal controls, filings and recordkeeping, and fundraising.

Participants who complete the day-long training program will be included in the new Leadership Mahoning Valley BoardMatch program that connects individuals interested in serving on boards with nonprofit organizations in need of board members.

Also, they will receive a completion certificate that can be shared with funders to illustrate their organization’s commitment to sound board governance practices.

The initial program is at the HBK Training Center, 6603 Summit Drive, Canfield, starting with breakfast at 8 a.m. The program is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reservations are required. The cost to attend is $50 per person.

Beth Short, director of Charitable Outreach and Education for the attorney general’s office, will be the guest presenter.

Additional sessions will be scheduled throughout the year. Contact JoAnn Stock, Leadership Mahoning Valley executive director, at joann@ regionalchamber.com or at 330-744-2131, ext. 1227, with questions.

Starting at $2.99/week.
