ATHENA nominations sought

Celebrating the accomplishments of outstanding professional women in the Mahoning Valley, the ATHENA Award program marks its 32nd year locally.

Nominations are being accepted with the winner being named May 15 at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield.

The Youngstown / Warren Regional Chamber and The Vindicator are co-sponsors.

Since its inception locally, the event has generated anticipation, visibility and admiration, organizers said.

Lauded as one of the Top Five largest in the country for its number of nominees and attendees, more than 1,000 women have been honored at the local celebration during the past 31 years.

Potential candidates will demonstrate professional accomplishment, community leadership and mentorship of other women.

Dr. Nicolette W. Powe captured the 2024 honor. Powe is a public health scientist and associate professor in Youngstown State University’s Department of Graduate Studies in Health and Rehabilitation Services.

She was cited for her work as an educator and mentor in impacting the Valley residents’ health and well-being; implementing a program to reduce racial and ethnic health disparities; mentoring young women in higher education for their mental and physical well-being; and more.
