Mahoning County

• BEAVER TOWNSHIP — A prayer service is scheduled for the veterans memorial in the township cemetery at the corner of state Routes 164 and 165 in North Lima at 11 a.m. Monday. Guest speaker will be Lt. Col. Scott Allen, chief public affairs officer for the 910th Airlift Wing out of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.

• BOARDMAN — The 119th Memorial Day parade hosted by Boardman Kiwanis Club will begin at 10 a.m. at Boardman Center Intermediate School on Market Street and will proceed north to U.S. Route 224, then head east to Boardman Township Park. There will be a program honoring veterans following the parade at the Maag Outdoor Amphitheater with the landing of a Black Hawk helicopter. In the event of rain, the service will be at 10 a.m. in the Boardman Center Intermediate School auditorum.

• CANFIELD — A Memorial Day weekend picnic is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Sovereign Grace Chapel, 1933 Canfield Road. The event will include food, beverages, games and inflatables for the children.

The featured speaker for the ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Plaza on the Canfield North Green will be Leo Connelly of the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. Following the ceremony at the Veterans Plaza, there will be a procession to the Canfield East Cemetery where a second brief ceremony will honor deceased Canfield veterans. Participants then will return to the Canfield War Vets Museum, where a final ceremony will be held to honor individuals whose names have been added to the Wall of Honor.

• LAKE MILTON — The Memorial Day parade will start lining up at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Mahoning Avenue boat launch ramp and end at the American Legion Post parking lot off Milton Avenue. Grand marshal will be Joseph Bonanno, 101, who served in the Army during World War II.

• POLAND — The Sons of the American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15th annual Memorial Day procession and ceremonies are 9 a.m. Saturday at historic Riverside Cemetery, where a Flying Flags For Heroes ceremony will take place in conjunction with the annual graves decoration.

At 9:15 a.m. Monday, Sons of the American Legion will conduct its annual Four Chaplains ceremony at the War Memorial Building Post 15 home, 35 Cortland St. At 10 a.m., the Memorial Day procession will depart from Post 15, and travel down College Street, turn right on South Main Street, where a ceremony for those lost at sea will take place 10:15 a.m. on the Main Street Bridge. The procession will continue on South Main, turning left onto Riverside Drive and into historic Riverside Cemetery for ceremonies. Keynote speaker will be Vietnam War veteran Dan Rivers.

• YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University’s Office of Veterans Affairs is hosting its annual event at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Veterans Plaza, 1 University Plaza , to remember those who have served in the Armed Forces. Luncheon will follow the ceremony.

A Smoky Hollow Memorial Service will be at 11:15 a.m. Monday at the corner of North Walnut Street and Rayen Avenue. Refreshments will be served after the service at Yosteria on Valley Street.

Trumbull County

• HUBBARD — Ceremony is 10 a.m. Monday in Union Cemetery and then to the war memorial. The dedication of the Purple Hearts Veterans Memorial Bridge will be 9 a.m. June 3. The bridge is located next to the old Stiver Chevrolet;

• McDONALD — Memorial service 1 p.m. Sunday at the War Memorial in Woodland Park, corner of Fifth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

• NILES — Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Niles City Cemetery veterans section hosted by American Legion William McKinley Post 106.

• BRACEVILLE — A Memorial Day parade will be held at 11 a.m. from the township center to the cemetery. A lunch will be held at noon at the road department garage.

• BROOKFIELD — Ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Memorial Day at the cemetery followed by the dedication of a bridge at noon on Warren Sharon Road, east of Yankee Run Golf Course, as “Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge” for three local veterans killed in Vietnam. A procession will begin at Grove Street and travel to the Brookfield Township Cemetery.

• CORTLAND — Observance will be at 11 a.m. Memorial Day at the Veterans Memorial at Point Park hosted by Cortland Veterans Memorial Committee and the American Legion Post 540. There will be an Air Force flyover by the Youngstown Air Reserve Station at the beginning. Speaker will be Maj. Nathanael Okhuysen, an active-duty Air Force staff judge advocate general and resident of Cortland.

• FOWLER — Celebration will be at 10 a.m. Memorial Day, with a memorial service at the center green followed by the parade at 11 a.m. Pizza and water will be provided at the fire department following the parade.

• HARTFORD — Ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Memorial Day at the village cemetery, state Routes 7 and 305.

• HOWLAND — Howland American Legion Post 700 will be observing Memorial Day with a service at 10 a.m. at the Howland Township Cemetery. Howland American Legion Post 700 will have a light luncheon / open house at 8273 High St.

• JOHNSTON — Johnston VFW Post 7614 will host a Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Johnston Cemetery, 4424 Greenville Road NE.

• LEAVITTSBURG — Leavittsburg American Legion Post 699 will have a Memorial Day parade beginning at 10 a.m. in the downtown area with a service honoring the men and women who have guarded our freedom.

• LORDSTOWN — Ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Memorial Day at the cemetery with refreshments served at the village administration building afterward.

• NEWTON FALLS — Parade will form at the west parking lot of Cadle Company by the fire station at 10 a.m. Memorial Day and travel south on North Canal to Broad Street to the West River Bridge. Judge Philip Vigorito with Kelley Brasko and Maryanne Madison from VFW Auxiliary 3332 will hold a service for the men and women lost at sea. The parade then will proceed to Veterans Park.

• WARREN — Trumbull County Memorial Day and Veterans Day Federation are hosting the annual observance and parade. On Memorial Day at 10:30 a.m., a wreath will be cast upon the water of the Mahoning River, just behind the Warren Community Amphitheatre. The service will begin at 11 a.m. at the amphitheater. The parade will begin at noon with lineup at 10 a.m. in Perkins Park. The parade will travel south on Mahoning Avenue from the Trumbull County Tourism Bureau to Market Street then east on Market to Chestnut, where it will head south on Chestnut to Niles Road and end at the entrance to Oakwood Cemetery. Inside the cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknowns, the VFW 1090 Auxiliary will conduct a ceremony and wreath laying.

W.D. Packard Concert Band will perform at Packard Music Hall, Warren, at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Mayor Bryan Tedesco also will speak, and his secretary, who also is a veteran, will read the names of the 99 Campbell residents who have died in service to their country.

• CANFIELD — Memorial Day services will be at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Plaza on the Canfield North Green. Speaker is Leo Connelly, commissioner with Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. Following the ceremony, procession to the Canfield East Cemetery for a second brief ceremony will take place to honor deceased Canfield veterans. A final ceremony will take place at the Canfield War Vets Museum, where names have been added to the Wall of Honor. Nonperishable food items are being collected for the Zion Lutheran Church Veterans Food Bank.

• GIRARD — The ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Memorial Day at the Girard City Cemetery sponsored by the Girard Veterans Council. Short biographies of deceased local Vietnam veterans will be presented by Girard High School class presidents from grades nine to 12.
