CELEBRATE POLAND: The annual Celebrate Poland festival will be Friday and Saturday at the village hall. The parade will be at 6 p.m. Friday followed by music performed by No Funk, No Justice. Saturday events include a pet costume contest, Chalk the Walk competition, scavenger hunt, petting zoo, historic walking tour, bake-off contest, basket raffle, music and marketplace. Fireworks conclude the event Saturday.
PRE-CLOVIS ARTIFACTS: The Mahoning Valley Archaeological Society will host Mark Pape at a 5 p.m. lecture on Thursday at The Ohio State University Mahoning County Extension Office, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield
Pape will share his Pre-Clovis artifacts from the Needle site in Coshocton County, as well as a regional overview. The event is free.
CHECKERS TOURNAMENT: The John Pete Checkers Tournament will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Woodland Park pavilion in McDonald. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Winners of each age group will receive a cash prize at the end of the tournament. Sign up sheets are available at the municipal building.
MCDONALD FESTIVAL: The 91st annual McDonald Firefighters Homecoming Festival is 6 to 11 p.m. nightly Wednesday to Saturday at Woodland Park off Ohio Avenue. A dunk tank will be at the festival Wednesday only. The parade will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday to begin the festival, which will include amusement rides, food, games, bingo and music. The 5K Run of the Mill race will be 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.
BIRDS IN FLIGHT: McKinley Memorial Library in Niles will present Wondrous Wednesdays with Birds in Flight Sanctuary of Canfield at 2 p.m. Wednesday showcasing various birds.
REPTILE SHOW: Girard Free Library will present an outdoor reptile show at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
POLAND SEMINARY 1964: Poland Seminary High School’s graduating class of 1964 is searching for classmates and teachers to attend the 60th class reunion at 6 p.m. at the Lake Club, then the Old Stone Tavern during Celebrate Poland’s festivities Friday and Saturday. Ohio history teacher and retired Youngstown State University history professor George Beelen will attend.
SUPPORT GROUP: The Jewish Community Center is offering a support group for grandparents caring for their grandchildren. The new program is offered 11 a.m. to noon the second and fourth Wednesday of the month at the center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown The program is part of the staying well offerings for ages 60 and older, To register, visit www.jccyoungstown.org The programs provide support, resources and a sense of community for those raising grandchildren.
