COMMUNITY NEWS: Greek festival coming this weekend
GREEK FEST: Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, 401 12th St., Campbell, will host its annual Greek Festival noon to 10 p.m. Friday to Sunday. Admission is free, and there will be Greek food, music, dancers and religious items. Indoor and outdoor dining will be available.
BANNED BOOK EVENT: A PFLAG banned book display event, “Read with Love: Censorship and Banned Books in America” will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 1105 Elm St., Youngstown.
Speakers will be novelist Chris Barzack; Dr. Belinda Boon, a nontenure track professor in Kent State University’s MLIS program since 2006; and Karen Schuber, co-founder of Lit Youngstown with Liz Hill, in 2015.
A display of banned books, a craft table and bookmarks for kids and voter education and registration information will be available
PASSENGER PIGEON: The Audubon Society of Mahoning Valley will host a free program at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Austintown Senior Center. Harvey Webster of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History will discuss the passenger pigeon. Social time is 6:30 p.m.
COMMUNITY CLEANUP: Mahoning County Soil and Water Conservation District is inviting local residents to participate in a community cleanup 10 a.m. to noon Sunday at the East Newport boat launch on East Newport Drive in Boardman. Participants will be provided with necessary supplies, including trash bags, gloves and water. The cleanup will be divided into two groups One group will clean at the lake shore and the other will clean the water in kayaks provided by Mill Creek MetroParks.
COZY CRAFTERS: Girard Free Library has started a Cozy Cafters group that will meet at 6 p.m. today at the library. The group will meet monthly. Those who knit, crochet or embroider can join for socializing and sharing tips. No registration is needed.
ART WORK: The Davis Family YMCA will host a “I Know What I Like” art show Oct. 6 to Nov. 10. Artwork will be received for the juried show 2 to 5 pm. Friday and 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at 45 McClurg Road, Boardman, All family-friendly art created by adult artists from the tri-county area will be accepted, For information, visit sgray@youngstownymca.org
HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION: A household hazardous waste collection will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Canfield Fairgrounds Gate 9 off state Route 46. This is for Mahoning County households only. No explosives or pharmaceuticals will be accepted. There will be a five-gallon limit in all containers. For times, last name A-F 9 to 11 a.m., last name G-N will be 11.a.m. to 1 p.m. and last name O-Z will be 1 to 3 p.m. For information, call 330-740-2060.
