DOROTHY DAY HOUSE: The Dorothy Day House of Hospitality on Belmont Avenue in Youngstown will have a 15th anniversary celebration Friday at St. Edward Church, 240 Tod Lane, Youngstown. A Mass will be at 3 p.m. and a reception will follow in the church hall.
The Dorothy Day House opened its doors Nov. 22, 2009, and was a joint venture between the Sisters of the Humility of Mary and the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown. Sister Ann McManamon, HM, served as the house coordinator from its opening until her retirement in January 2023.
The Dorothy Day House of Hospitality in Youngstown was inspired by the life and work of Dorothy Day (1897-1980), an American journalist, social activist and founder of the Catholic Worker Movement.
The Dorothy Day House provides services to homeless and low- to no-income people in the Youngstown community. Services include an evening meal each Monday through Thursday, access to showers on a weekly basis, a monthly food and personal hygiene products distribution, and a produce garden, which provides fresh fruits and vegetables to guests. It is run entirely by volunteers.
