Community news: Poland Historical Society to explore 18th century Christmas

SOCIETY TO MEET: The Poland Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Little Red SchoolHouse, 4515 Center Road. Election of officers and trustees will take place and guest speaker is Tracie Manning, curator of education at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, who will speak on 18th century Christmas. The free program will begin at 7:30 p.m.

WARD MEETING: Youngstown Third Ward Councilwoman Samantha Turner will host her community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown. Guest speaker is the staff of the city’s planning and economic development department.

THANKSGIVING POTLUCK: The Girard Multi-Generational Center on Trumbull Avenue will host a Thanksgiving potluck luncheon noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Guests are asked to bring their favorite dish to share. The center will provide ham and turkey.

A trivia fun and ice cream bar will be 10 a.m. to noon Friday. Participants will test their knowledge of many topics.

SOUND THERAPY: The Unity Church Centre in Liberty will host sound therapy at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Participants are asked to dress comfortably and bring a pillow or blanket. A love offering will be accepted.

MUSEUMS FOR ALL: The Mahoning Valley Historical Society has joined Museums for All, a signature access program of the Institute of Museums and Library Services. Through Museums for All, those receiving food assistance (SNAP benefits) can gain free or reduced admission to more than 1,300 museums throughout the United States simply by presenting their EBT card and a photo ID.

The Arms Family Museum and Tyler History Center in Youngstown will have free and reduced admission of $1 per person.

VIETNAM VETERAN: David Nelis, a Vietnam veteran, will discuss his war experiences at the meeting of the World War II Heritage Group at 7 p.m. today at A La Cart Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield. Nelis served in 1968 and 1969.

PARK LIGHTS: Firestone Recreational Park, 298 E. Park Ave. in Columbiana, will host the annual Joy of Christmas Light Show 6 to 9 p.m. Friday to Nov. 23 and Nov. 28 to Dec. 28. There also will be Santa’s Ice Castle and a Gingerbread House for Mrs. Claus’ Story Time every Thursday and Sunday. Cost is $20 per vehicle.

READ TO DOGS: Girard Free Library will present K9s for Compassion at 6 p.m. today for children up to age 12 able to read a story to one of the organization’s trained therapy dogs. Call the library to register at 330-545-2308.

COZY CRAFTERS; The Girard Free Library wil host Cozy Crafters at 6 p.m. today for anyone who knits, crochets and embroiders to bring their current project to a group of needle-wielders. The Cozy Crafters will socialize and share tips while working on their projects. No registration is required.

NEWCOMERS MEET: The Newcomers Club of the Mahoning Valley will have its luncheon meeting at noon Wednesday at O’Charley’s Restaurant, 930 Windham Court, Boardman. Members will collect donations for 18-year-olds who will be transitioning out of the Mahoning County Children Services foster care system. They also are collecting anything that may help them set up a home for themselves like towels, sheets, blankets, pillows, snack items and health care items. IRON AND STEEL MODEL TRAIN SHOW: The Iron and Steel Model Train Show will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at St. Mary’s Assumption Social Center, 356 S. Bella Vista, Youngstown. Cost is $7 for adults, with age 16 and under admitted free.

TRAIN DISPLAYS: The Burchfield Homestead Society’s Trees and Trains holiday event will feature model train displays in two locations on the weekend afternoons before Thanksgiving.

Trees decorated in themes from Burchfield paintings and model trains will be on display 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Burchfield Homestead, 867 E. Fourth St., Salem. The tree display will remain open at the Homestead 1 to 5p.m. Sundays, Dec. 1, 8, 15 and 22, and by appointment.

At the Homestead, the custom train display will operate in a room the Burchfield family used as a bedroom early in the 1900s. This new addition will be created and run by members of the Cornersburg Model Train Club.

A large layout of model trains also will be open to visitors 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Naragon Law Office, 248 E. State St., downtown Salem. Attorney Fred Naragon, who is treasurer of the Burchfield Homestead Society, operates this intricate, multi-train display that visitors can see by entering his office’s back door on Sugar Tree Alley.
