Community News: Speech set on Ohio’s only national park

PARK PROGRAM: The Audubon Society of the Mahoning Valley will host a free program at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Austintown Senior Center with social time at 6:30 p.m. Erik Broviak, a retired engineer and outdoors enthusiast, will speak on the 50th anniversary of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio’s only national park. The event is free.

FOOD FOR FINES: The Girard Free Library is offering Food for Fines through Tuesday when patrons who have fines on materials can have them forgiven and removed for up to $25 with donations of two nonperishable food items for the Emmanuel Care Center in Girard. The offer does not apply to materials from other CLEVNET libraries.

CENTER DONATIONS: The Emmanuel Care Center in Girard is accepting applications for Christmas gift cards for toys and other items for children through Dec. 6. Families who are registered at the center can call 330-545-4301 to register their child up to age 12. Families can suggest gift ideas for the children. Donations are needed by Dec. 11. Families will be able to pick up items 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 17 and 18.

SANTA VISIT: The Girard Free Library will have Santa Claus and the Grinch visit at 6 p.m. Dec. 2. There will be various activities for children, including cookie decorating.

GIVING TUESDAY: The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is bringing back its monthlong Giving Tuesday campaign that will see donations to its agency funds matched up to a total of $50,000. Giving Tuesday will be marked Dec. 3. Donations can be made online at CFMV.org/agency-funds or by mailing a check to CFMV, 201 E. Commerce St. Suite 150 Youngstown, Ohio 44503 with the agency fund’s name in the memo line.

The Giving Tuesday matching program is supported by the Arnett Family Fund, created by the estate of Diana R. Arnett to support education, the arts and underserved communities in the Mahoning Valley. The fund is now part of the pool of discretionary money available for the Community Foundation to address community needs.

WORLD AIDS DAY: The 36th annual World AIDS Day will be observed Dec. 5 at the Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield. The Ursuline Sisters Mission, which operates the Ursuline Sisters HIV / AIDS Ministry, is leading the local commemoration of World AIDS Day. The annual event aims to increase awareness, combat stigma and support people affected by HIV / AIDS.

Though World Aids Day actually is Dec. 1, the Ursuline Sisters HIV / AIDS Ministry will host events 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the center.
