GUEST SPEAKERS: A Gathering Place event will be 11 a.m. today at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St., Canfield, featuring speakers from the Better Business Bureau. This is a free community outreach program offered to senior citizens. No registration is needed.
CANFIELD INVESTMENT CLUB: The Canfield Investment Club is hosting its first meeting of the new year at the Canfield library at 6 p.m. Thursday. The club was founded in the 1950s by Spike McLaughlin, teacher, coach and long-term former mayor of Canfield. It traditionally meets at a restaurant or private club to discuss trading in stocks. The speaker for this meeting is Louise Gregory, regional director of My I-Club & Better Investing magazine. This year’s officers are Carl Gagliardi, president; Russ Miklos, vice president; George Bellish, treasurer; and Bruce Neff, secretary. For more information, call Neff at 330-207-0545.
SMARTS OPEN HOUSE: Students Motivated by the Arts (SMARTS) Center, 25 Boardman St., Youngstown, will host an open house 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday for those 18 months to age 5. The event is open to the public with registration needed.
SUICIDE SURVIVORS: Jewish Family and Community Services is offering a 10-week survivors of suicide support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide. The group will meet 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays for 10 weeks starting Tuesday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane. To register, call Laura at 330-746-7929 ext. 243. The support group is made possible by a partnership with the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board.
MARINE CORPS GIVEAWAY: The Tri-State Detachment Marine Corps League 494, VFW Austintown 4237 and VFW Hubbard 3767, in cooperation with Ohio Charities and Sparkle Market, will give away 53 $50 Sparkle gift certificates to military veterans at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Austintown VFW, 4150 Mahoning Ave. Veterans should use the back door entrance and bring valid proof of their military service: DD-214, Veterans Administration ID or a veteran ID from the Veterans Service Commission. These gift certificates are left over from a Christmas giveaway.
CRAFT WORKSHOP: The Girard Free Library will host a craft workshop at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The event will have participants making a crochet crab keychain. Those attending should be familiar with how to chain and single crochet. Materials will be provided. Registration is needed.
APOLLO 17: The Girard Free Library will host a presentation on Apollo 17, the last manned mission to the moon, at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Doug Fowler, a former adjunct professor at Youngstown State University’s department of geology, physics and astronomy, will discuss the discovery of astronauts Eugene Cernan, Harrison Schmidt and Ronald Evans, who ventured to the moon in December 1972. Registration is needed at the library.
ASPIRE PROGRAM: The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center Adult Career Center’s Aspire program is offering free adult basic education classes to help people earn their GED and for post-secondary school. There will be a registration event 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the career center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, Canfield. To RSVP, call 330-729-4010.
MEETING SET: The Poland Historical Society has changed its meeting to 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at Little Red Schoolhouse, 4515 Center St., Poland. The business meeting is at 6:30 p.m. and the program is 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker is Emily Slaven with Daughters of the American Revolution, who will discuss “Do You Have a Patriot?” Annual membership dues are $20 per person. FAMILY DAY: The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown will offer a Family Day at 1:30 p.m. Sunday that will include tours, demonstrations, a gallery scavenger hunt and art making. The event is for children of all ages and their families.
