COMMUNITY NEWS: Canfield church offers Gathering Place program

GATHERING PLACE: The Gathering Place will meet 11 a.m. today at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 550 N. Broad St, Canfield. Guest speaker is Jodi Glass, recruiting and marketing coordinator of the Mahoning County Career & Technical Center, who will discuss the school’s role as the post-secondary Ohio Technical Center serving adults in the Mahoning Valley. The free community outreach program is offered the second Monday of each month for all senior citizens. A boxed lunch will be provided.

GREEK FEST: Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church, 401 12th St., Campbell, will host a Greek Fest noon to 10 p.m. Friday through Sunday. There will be traditional Greek food and pastries, music and folk dancers

FRUIT SALE: Hubbard Rotary Club is having a fruit sale with California navel oranges and Florida grapefruits. Orders need to be placed by Feb. 17 and can be picked up 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 22 at Repair That Glass, 770 Main St, Hubbard. Proceeds benefit the Hubbard Rotary van, which is used to transport local senior citizens. Checks should be made out to Hubbard Rotary, P. O. Box 232, Hubbard Ohio 44425.

SETON III: Seton III, a Catholic organization for women that promotes community service, will meet at noon Thursday at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The prayer will be led by Judy Love and Valentine’s Day music will be presented by Donnie Abraham. Hostesses will be Mary Lou Beck, Mary Rita Carney and Claranne McCloud.

BEEKEEPERS TO MEET: The Columbiana and Mahoning County Beekeepers Association will meet 1 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive. Bruce Deafenbaugh will discuss the importance of beehive maintenance. A social potluck lunch will begin at 1 p.m. and the meeting starts at 2 p.m.

ANNUAL CONTEST: The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation is inviting students in grades 7 to 12 in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, and Western Pennsylvania to enter its annual Holocaust Writing, Art and MultiMedia contest.

This annual contest is held in conjunction with Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), an internationally recognized day to be commemorated April 24. The theme for the 2025 contest is “Auschwitz — A Place on Earth.” The title comes from a 16-panel exhibit from Yad Vashem titled “Auschwitz – A Place on Earth: The Auschwitz Album.” The Auschwitz Album is the only surviving visual evidence of the process leading to mass murder at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The Auschwitz exhibit, which will be on display at the Jewish Community Center in the Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Art Gallery from April 23-30 and includes photographs from 1944 depicting the arrival of Hungarian Jews from Carpatho-Ruthenia. The exhibit is free.

Contest submissions must relate to the genocide of Jews at Auschwitz or any other extermination camp. The deadline is March 28.

Presentation of contest awards will be made during the Yom Hashoah Community Commemoration at noon April 29 at the Mahoning County Courthouse. All are also invited to the Shoah Memorial Service 4 p.m. April 27 at the Jewish Community Center.
