COMMUNITY NEWS: Packard’s role in World War II

PACKARD GOES TO WAR: Charles Ohlin will present a program titled “Packard During World War II” when he speaks to the World War II Heritage group April 21 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The presentation will be preceded by a buffet dinner for which reservations are required by contacting Dave Frank at 330-757-0515 by Thursday.

Ohlin will describe wartime production at Packard Electric in Warren and the Packard Motor Car Co., based in Detroit. The PowerPoint program is highlighted by a short newsreel titled “Men Bet Their Lives on It.” A lifetime resident of Warren, Ohlin is the director of education and historical research at the National Packard Museum of Warren. He has maintained a private law practice in Warren since 1988, and has served as an adjunct professor at Kent State University, where he has taught a course in business law and ethics since 2014. His museum research partner, Cindee Mines, also will assist during the presentation.

SOCIETY TO MEET: The Poland Historical Society will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Red School House, 4515 Center Road, Poland. A program about Quaker Falls by Roslyn Torella will begin at 5:30 p.m. Weather permitting, guests are invited to a short drive to the Quaker Falls site, which recently has been renovated for safer access to the stairs and observation decks. Torella is self-appointed unofficial historian of Lowellville village.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY: Habitat for Humanity of the Mahoning Valley is accepting applications for its homeownership program, including two new homes in 2025. To become a future Habitat homeowner, applicants must meet several requirements, including having a housing need. The upcoming new homes available for potential families will be built in Warren and Lordstown during 2025 and in Boardman during 2026. Applications must be downloaded from Habitat-Mahoning.org or picked up between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday at 1919 Midlothian Blvd, Youngstown. SCRAPPERS EGG HUNT: The Scrappers will host the annual egg hunt at the Eastwood Field in Niles at

6 p.m. Tuesday. Gates open at 5 p.m. The first egg hunt is at 6 p.m. There will be three age groups, 1-4, 5-8 and 9-12. There also will be a variety of activities for children, including photos with the Easter Bunny and Scrappy, face painting and balloon twisting.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and are on sale at the Scrappers front office and online at mvscrappers.com. Children and adults will need a ticket.
