COMMUNITY NEWS: Poland Historical Society seeks community-minded groups

SOCIETY SEEKS INPUT: The Poland Historical Society wants to partner with other community-minded organizations to work together on programs that will benefit the Poland community. Laurie Fox, Poland Historical Society president, invites representatives of different groups and organizations to attend meetings at 5 p.m. today and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Poland Library. Discussion will include the America 250th Ohio events.

CHURCH SETS SALE: Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, will host its annual GAB sale 9 a.m. to 4 p.m Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. A variety of items will be available. Saturday is fill-a- bag day for $4. The sale has taken place for more than 50 years.

MUSICAL PRESENTATION: The Boardman High School Symphony Chamber and Classical Orchestra will present its annual spring concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Boardman Performing Arts Center. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free.

ART SHOW: The Educational Service Center of Eastern Ohio will present the 37th annual high school art show 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, Canfield. The free exhibition will include more than 250 pieces of art created by students from more than 20 school districts across Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY: Members of the Youngstown Press Club will observe World Press Freedom Day on Saturday by reading the names of 103 journalists killed last year while practicing their profession.

The annual event, which is part of a global recognition, will begin at noon at the Kirk Road Pavilion of the MetroParks Bikeway Trailhead, 6685 Kirk Road.

The number of journalists killed in 2024 was the highest since the Committee to Protect Journalists began tracking those numbers in 1992. In the Austintown observance, those reading the names of journalists slain last year will be: Mona Alexander, Jonathan Cambouris, Jordan Cohen, Lori Factor, JoAnn Kolarik, Dennis Mangan, Jim Michaels, George Nelson, Tony Paglia, Nick Rich, Chris Travers, Madison Tromler, Emily Webster Love and Ralph Zerbonia. The event is free and open to the public and reservations are not required.

NOMINATIONS: The Youngstown Press Club is seeking nominations from its members for its Hall of Fame and for its excellence in media and First Amendment awards and medal of merit.

Nomination deadline is Thursday. Hall of Fame inductees and winners of other awards will be selected by a committee of YPC members and announced in early July. Honorees will be recognized at the club’s Hall of Fame and Awards Dinner Sept. 24 at Stambaugh Auditorium.
