Celebrate Poland planning massive parade celebration

POLAND — Celebrate Poland kicks off Friday with a long list of events and family fun centered around the village hall.

It features a few new things this year — one of which is a huge parade celebration.

“This is the Western Reserve Joint Fire District’s 100th anniversary,” village council President Michael Thompson said. “We sent invitations to over 100 fire departments and don’t know exactly how many we will get.”

He said the hope was to have 100 firetrucks in the noon parade on Saturday.

Celebrate Poland director Cindy Best said because of the huge parade Saturday, the popular Poland Idol contest was moved to the fall celebration Oct. 7.

As for what else is new this year, Best said, “Friday night we are excited to have Youngstown’s House Band playing.”

The band and music is 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Cortland Field stage.

Saturday’s events start with the Chalk the Walk event as artists register to take a section of sidewalk and turn it into a masterpiece. The winners will be announced at 11:30 a.m.

Saturday will feature other fun events and Poland’s great bake-off this year is celebrating lemons.

“Bake your favorite lemon dessert and bring it in,” Best said. “There is no need to preregister. We have an adult division 18 and older and a youth division under 18.”

She said kids’ world at Cortland Field behind village hall will feature bounces, a petting zoo and Brittney Marie with her stilts and hoops.

Also, the Poland Historical Society will be selling vintage school books, Linda Clark prints of Poland, post cards and Poland license plate frames. It will also be raffling a handmade quilt.

Across the creek from village hall, the new Rotary Park will open at 11 a.m. The park was built to recognize the service members of the Poland community.

The historical society will give a walking tour of the village graveyard 6 p.m. Friday at Poland Presbyterian Church. Saturday’s tour will be off historic Main Street. Both tours will be with re-enactors in era-styled clothing.
