Boardman man, 24, arrested in Jan. 6 township killing

BOARDMAN — Jerome L. Tubbs, 24, of Matthews Road in Boardman was arrested Friday on a murder charge in the Jan. 6 shooting death of Michael Kosarich, 30, of Youngstown, near the corner of Market Street and Indianola Road in the township.

Boardman police responded to the area of Market and Indianola at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 6 for calls about gunshots being heard. Officers found a car at the intersection with Kosarich inside. He had been shot several times, according to a Boardman police report.

Kosarich was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he died.

Boardman police said Kosarich died after someone opened fire on his vehicle. Boardman Police Chief Todd Werth said shortly after the killing that detectives were following multiple leads. He said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation processed Kosarich’s vehicle for evidence.

Tubbs is charged with first degree murder. He could get more than 10 years in prison if convicted. Boardman police filed the charge Friday in Mahoning County Area Court. Tubbs is likely to be arraigned there early this week.’

Tubbs has been charged in Youngstown Municipal Court with several offenses since 2021, including felony improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle from October of 2021.

The charge was later amended to misdemeanor improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, to which he pled guilty, and he was placed on six months of probation. He also was ordered to surrender a Glock firearm.

Tubbs also was charged with first-degree misdemeanor failure to comply with the orders of a police officer and and a marked lanes violation Nov. 9 in Youngstown.

He was scheduled for a final pretrial in that matter for Feb. 1, but he asked for the hearing to be postponed. It was reset to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 21 before Judge Renee DiSalvo of Youngstown Municipal Court.

Tubbs also was convicted in Youngstown Municipal Court in March of 2022 on operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was placed on one year of probation and his driver’s license was suspended for one year.
