YOUNGSTOWN — A man, 37, was killed in a 2 a.m. homicide today in the 2200 block of Montclair Avenue on the South Side.

Police were called to that area for a man having been shot. When they arrived, Youngstown police officers and ambulance personnel began life-saving measures, but the man died, according to a Youngstown police news release.

Youngstown police detectives, the police department crime scene unit and Mahoning County Coroner’s Office arrived to carry to an investigation, which is being treated as a homicide, the release states.

The police department asks that anyone in the area at the time of the shooting please contact the police department at 330-742-8973 or Crime Stoppers at 330-746-2583 with information or tips, which can be left anonymously.

No arrest has been made in the killing.

The homicide is No. 19 in the city so far this year, with the last one before that being the Oct. 18 death of Reynaldo Hernandez, 24, who was found shot to death early that day on Liberty Road near Wardle Avenue on Youngstown’s East Side in the area of Mount Hope Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery.

A Youngstown police report suggests that Hernandez was shot on Bott Street not far from where his body was found on the East Side.

Six men were indicted last week in connection to the Hernandez killing. They are Andre K. Bailey, 40; Vincent Marbley, 59; and Eddie Winphrie, 41, who were indicted on two counts each of aggravated murder with gun specifications and single counts of aggravated robbery with a gun specification, tampering with evidence and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Three other men were indicted on other charges in the case. They are Daniel Ramsey, 43, of New Castle, Pa., on involuntary manslaughter with a gun specification and tampering with evidence; Shawn Jones, 35, on one count of tampering with evidence; and Richard W. Lightner, 40, on one count of tampering with evidence.

The homicide before that one was one day earlier — Oct. 17 — when George Grays, 62, was found shot at 1:31 a.m. inside a vehicle parked on the street in the 400 block of Norwood Avenue on the North Side. He had been shot multiple times, and police consider his death to be a homicide.

Officers removed the man from the vehicle and performed life-saving measures, but he died, according to a Youngstown police news release.

If two Youngstown officer involved killings from this year are not counted, Youngstown has had 19 homicides this year. The city had 22 homicides in 2023.
