North Carolina man posts bond following Thursday Coitsville fatal crash
COITSVILLE — Robert C. Powell, 24, of Westend, N.C., was arraigned Friday morning in Campbell Municipal Court on aggravated vehicular homicide and other charges and was held over the weekend in the Mahoning County jail in lieu of $127,500 bond in a Thursday fatal crash on U.S. Route 422 in Coitsville Township.
Powell was released from jail Monday after posting bond.
No plea was entered on the felony offense, according to online municipal court records. Acting Judge Miriam Ocasio, acting judge, presided over the arraignment. Powell was found indigent, according to court records.
The second-degree felony charge Powell faces could result in more than eight years in prison if convicted. The Coitsville Police Department file the charges. Powell returns for his second hearing at 11 a.m. April 17. Powell remained in the county jail Monday morning, according to jail records.
In addition to the aggravated vehicular homicide, Powell is also charged with improperly handling a firearm in a motor vehicle, a low-level felony.
As a condition of bond, if Powell is released from the county jail, he will be required to be on house arrest, court records state.
Powell is also charged with two misdemeanor offenses, drunken driving, a first-degree misdemeanor, and failure to yield the right of way, a minor misdemeanor. He entered no pleas on either of those charges Friday. Bond of $2,500 was set on the drunken driving charge.
Powell also returns to court for a second hearing on the misdemeanor charges at 11 a.m. April 17.
