AUSTINTOWN — The Skate Zone Fun Center is closing its doors, and a car wash will be taking its place.

The last day for skating is March 28.

The new tenant at 5420 Mahoning Ave. will be a car wash named Modwash, according to Austintown Zoning Director Darren Crivelli.

Crivelli said on Feb. 18 the car wash got its conditional use permit by a 4-1 vote at an Austintown Zoning Board meeting. The board member who voted against the change raised concerns of spacing and the layout of the car wash in regard to the exterior spacing when vehicles exit the car wash, Crivelli said.

The board member was assured by a representative of the development company, Hutton, a Tennessee-based company, that there was more than enough space.

A representative of the company said it hopes to begin construction within the next 60 days. He would not disclose how much the project will cost.

The building will remain intact, but will be repurposed, and the interior of Skate Zone will be removed so construction can begin, Crivelli said.
