Official disappointed in student charged with stealing her car

Keys taken from Boys, Girls Club

Stevens

YOUNGSTOWN — An official at the Center for Urban Scholars, 3405 Market St., was disappointed when she found out Monday that the young man who apparently stole her car that day is one of her students.

Shanelle Toney told Shawn D. Stevens Jr., 18, of Pointview Avenue, on Monday afternoon she could not believe he would steal her car. Stevens hung his head as Toney spoke, according to a Youngstown police report.

Stevens is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, a felony.

Toney went to the police station at 2:39 p.m. Monday to report the stolen car. She said she was with a group of students at the Boys and Girls Club, 2105 Oak St., for a celebration. She said she set her keys down on a table to assist with serving lunch. About 20 minutes later, she saw that they were gone.

She went into the parking lot to see if she had left the keys in the car and discovered it missing. She went to the police station to report the matter.

Later, the location of the stolen Chevrolet Cruze was determined to be ESA Apartments, at 610 Kendis Circle on the East Side. An officer went there and found the vehicle stationary with two males inside.

One was Stevens, who admitted he took the car after finding the keys inside the Boys and Girls Club, according to the police report. While the officer was speaking to Stevens, Toney arrived to retrieve her vehicle. She noticed Stevens and said, “Why would you do this to me?” That’s when Stevens “put his head down,” the report states.

Toney said she is principal at the school and Stevens is one of her students.

Toney told police her child’s car seat and book bag were missing from the car. Stevens told police he had put them in a garbage receptacle at the apartment complex, the report states. Both items were retrieved.
