Police arrest pig’s former owners, take pair to jail
CAMPBELL — The former owners of a 400-pound pig that police found in their basement have been arrested again after neither showed up to serve their jail sentences as required.
Cortney Kline, 36, and Shawn Kline, 27, of Chambers Street, each pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals in Campbell Municipal Court on Jan. 20. The couple was arrested in Youngstown on Monday, according to police.
A warrant had been out for Shawn Kline since March 2, after he did not show up to his 30-day jail sentence Feb. 28. A warrant was issued for Cortney Kline on Friday after she did not appear for her 30-day jail sentence April 1.
As part of their sentencing, neither can own an animal for the next five years.
When officers arrived at the Chambers Street home last July, they found Oreo, a pig, lying in what police described as “dungeonlike” conditions. She was in a dark in a room that reeked of urine and feces, according to a police report.
Oreo’s hooves were so overgrown that she could not walk to her nearby water. The animal rescue employees who assisted police said the pig was dehydrated and likely suffering from arthritis because she was so overweight.
The police report notes that the couple said Oreo was their emotional support animal and they’d had her since she was a piglet. It took six people to get the animal onto a stretcher to carry her out of the apartment.
