Boardman man Rodney Allen Grace remains jailed on domestic charge

BOARDMAN — A local man remains in jail after police say he assaulted his pregnant girlfriend Monday.

Rodney Allen Grace, 46, of Boardman, appeared Tuesday in Mahoning County Boardman Court on a felony charge of domestic violence. Judge Joseph Houser imposed a $10,000 cash or surety bond and ordered Grace to have no contact with the woman. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 28.

Grace was arrested at about 8 p.m. Monday at a friend’s home on Lucerne Lane in Boardman. The Boardman police report states that officers responded to a call in the 4700 block of Southern Boulevard around 3 a.m. where they found the woman, seven months pregnant, standing barefoot in the snow in subfreezing weather. The report states she appeared to be in a state of shock, and she later said as much.

The woman had come out of her neighbor’s house when police approached. Police escorted her back into that home to speak with her.

According to the report, she said Grace, being driven by a friend, had come banging on the door around 8 p.m. She told police she tried to block the door but Grace got inside and began arguing with her. She told police she was angry because he had left two days earlier to get cigarettes and never returned. She told police she asked Grace to leave several times before he “open-hand punched” her in the face.

The report states she told police that Grace then took her phone and $50 cash and left the house, and she chased him out to the car. She told police that she grabbed onto the open passenger window, where Grace was seated, but the driver began to back out of the driveway, seemingly trying to hit her.

She told police she lost her grip on the car and fell to the ground and the front end of the car ran over her, though the report does not state exactly what part of the woman was struck. The report states that paramedics observed a broken finger and old bruises and scars on her legs, but no fresh wounds.

The report does not name the driver and does not say whether the driver will be charged in the incident.
