Youngstown’s killing spree drags on

Man found dead on East Side logs in at 5th homicide this month

YOUNGSTOWN — The body of a 22-year-old man was found Tuesday morning behind a row of apartments in the 600 block of McBride Street on the East Side, Youngstown police reported. He became the city’s fifth homicide victim this month.

The apartment complex is called Victory Estates. No arrests have been made, the police department stated in a news release.

When officers arrived, they called for ambulance personnel, who arrived and pronounced the man dead from an apparent gunshot wound. City police called it a homicide that was reported at 5:42 a.m.

The Youngstown Police Department detective division and crime scene unit were called to investigate, and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office is part of the investigation.

The police department asks anyone with information on the case to call the police department at 330-746-8973 or Crime Stoppers at 330-746-2583 to provide tips or information, which can be left anonymously.

Tips leading to an arrest and / or prosecution are eligible for a monetary reward.

The death is the fifth homicide in the past 10 days. The most recent one was the 1 a.m. Thursday shooting death of Mathue O’Malley, 27, in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue. He was shot by Youngstown police.

When the first officer arrived for a disturbance, the officer “was immediately met with gunfire from a male inside the house,” and they exchanged gunfire, the release states. O’Malley was shot in the exchange of gunfire that ensued.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to conduct an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the press release states.

The Youngstown Police Department Internal Affairs Division also will conduct an internal investigation, which “reviews departmental policy,” the release states. “Officer(s) involved were placed on administrative leave pursuant departmental policy.”

Tuesday’s homicide is the 13th of the year in the city. There were 22 homicides in 2023. Youngstown did not record its 13th homicide of 2023 until September.

There also were homicides on Wednesday night on Steel Street at Salt Springs Road on the West Side and Tuesday night on the 500 block of East Judson Avenue on the South Side.
