Hubbard residents escape fire thanks to passerby

HUBBARD — A passerby alerted four residents in the 2300 block of Wick Campbell Road about a garage fire Monday.

Katelyn Johnston, one of the occupants, was unaware of the fire until a passerby on a four-wheeler notified her of the situation, according to a post she made on social media.

All occupants and their dogs made it out safely. The Eagle Joint Fire District responded to the call at 6:28 p.m. Monday.

Eagle Joint Fire District Chief Ron Stanish estimated the cost of the damage to be between $35,000 and $45,000 for the garage, $15,000 to $20,000 for the contents and $20,000 to $30,000 for the siding on the house.

A post made by Johnston states that as she was rescuing her dogs and kids after being notified, she saw “the garage was half gone, and it was getting closer to the house.”

“We had just ordered three new garage doors to be installed in a week or two,” she stated in the post. “All of my furniture restoring equipment was in there — all of my furniture. I just finished a beautiful antique dresser and my grandfather’s library desk. The kid’s bikes and other toys were out there. All of our power tools and equipment were in there. I was just in the garage an hour or so before it caught fire.”

She said another passerby and neighbors stopped to help upon seeing the fire.

“They offered their vehicles for the kids to sit in. They held my little dog, Smalls,” she stated in the post. “They walked my larger dog, Charlie. They helped watch the kids so they didn’t get hurt. My neighbor even let me put my dog in his dog’s fenced area.”

Stanish said the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

“I talked to them (the family). I took a statement from them,” he said. “They basically said they had no idea what caused it.”

Other departments that responded were the Liberty Township Fire Department, Brookfield Fire Department, the Youngstown Air Reserve Station Fire Department, the Vienna Township Fire Department, the Girard Fire Department and the McDonald Fire Department.

Starting at $2.99/week.
