Youngstown police probing apparent homicide

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are investigating the shooting death of a man on Judson Avenue on the South Side.

Police were alerted to the shooting victim at 5:04 a.m. and found him in the driveway of a home.

He was deceased when officers arrived, having been shot in the head, according to a Youngstown police report. When ambulance personnel arrived, they confirmed that he was deceased.

The police department’s detective division and crime scene personnel came to the scene to investigate, the report states.

Police have not released any other information on the victim, such as his age. The police department did not provide a news release regarding the death, which the police report suggested was an “aggravated murder.”

If confirmed to be a homicide, it will be the 14th of the year in Youngstown. It would be the 15th of the year in Youngstown if the June 13 officer-involved shooting of Mathue O’Malley is counted. The city had 22 homicides in 2023.

The most recent homicide before Thursday was the June 18, shooting death of Angel L. Sostre, whose body was found at about 5:45 a.m. behind a row of apartments in the 600 block of McBride Street on the East Side. Samuel X. Perez, 23, was arrested recently in Sostre’s death.

Bond was set at $1 million in Youngstown Municipal Court when Perez was arraigned Wednesday.

Shaina Rochford, assistant Youngstown prosecutor, asked for the $1 million bond, saying Perez admitted to shooting Sostre.

The O’Malley officer-involved shooting was the homicide prior to the Sostre homicide.

Starting at $2.99/week.
