City man pleads to drug charges

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County prosecutors are recommending that Kevontae L. Thomas, 24, of Belden Avenue, get two to three years in prison after pleading guilty to three drug charges and a weapons charge.

Judge Anthony Donofrio of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will sentence Thomas at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 3. Thomas remains free on bond awaiting sentencing.

Thomas pleaded guilty to a high-level felony of aggravated drug possession that states that he possessed a bulk amount of methamphetamine on Oct. 7, 2023.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing a fentanyl-

related compound and possessing cocaine, both low-level felonies, on Oct. 7, and pleaded guilty to three forfeiture specifications. All three specifications state that Thomas is forfeiting $1,700 in cash that was confiscated as a part of the investigation of the drug offenses.

Thomas also pleaded guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm, a mid-level felony. He possessed a firearm June 22, according to his indictment.

He was not permitted to possess the firearm because of having been indicted Nov. 16 on the drug charges to which he pleaded guilty Tuesday, according to court documents.

Several other charges in Thomas’ indictments will be dismissed in exchange for his guilty pleas.

Thomas could get more than 10 years in prison for his five convictions, but judges generally sentence defendants close to the amount of time in a defendant’s plea agreement.
