Assault reported against Mooney coach

Incident reportedly occurred after game in Warren

ardinal Mooney High School football coach was assaulted in the coaches’ office in the locker room at the high school after a football game Friday night, according to a Youngstown police report.

The Vindicator learned the name of the coach, but the names of victims are redacted in police reports under the state’s Marsy’s Law. The name of the suspect is not being published because he has not been charged.

The report states that Youngstown police were called to Mooney High School on the South Side about 10:30 p.m. Friday after the team returned from a 20-6 loss at Warren G. Harding High School.

An officer spoke to Mooney head coach Carl Pelini and other members of the coaching staff, and they said one of the coaches and one of the players “had some words” over an incident involving the player. This was not the first time this had occurred with this player, the officer was told.

After the game, the coaches were in the coaches’ office when the player’s father “barged through the office door and asked who had been giving” his son a “hard time,” the report states.

When one of the coaches responded that it was him, the father “sucker punched” that coach in the face, the report states. The coach said he “‘somehow fell’ into a desk, and he thought that he may have broken ribs.”

Paramedics spoke to the coach, who said he preferred to get his own ride to the hospital to be checked for broken ribs. The officer spoke to several other coaches, who described the incident the way the alleged victim did except to say the parent struck the coach “before throwing him into a desk, which is where they believe he injured his ribs.”

They said the coach ended up on the floor, “and the parent was on top of him, continuing to strike him,” the report states. “They advised that they intervened at that point,” and the parent left. The other coaches advised that the player “was present” “when this (alleged assault) occurred, and he was physically involved.”

The coach who was assaulted told the officer he thinks the parent was intoxicated when the episode occurred. A Youngstown Police detective took photos of the coach’s injuries.

When the coach was contacted Monday and asked about the incident and asked whether he wanted to discuss the incident and be identified, he said, “I have been told not to say anything.”

Capt. Jason Simon of the Youngstown Police Department said Monday the parent has not been charged, and there is an “ongoing investigation.” The captain said he does not know whether the parent was questioned about the incident.

The Vindicator also called the school Monday afternoon to talk to Nick Beyer, principal / president of Mooney High School, but has not heard back.

Dennis Biviano, public relations and media specialist for the Diocese of Youngstown, responded to an email on the matter by saying “We are aware of what transpired on Friday. However, it is an ongoing investigation and we have no comment at this time.”
