Campbell man indicted in shooting of dog
WARREN — A man from Campbell is set to be arraigned Oct. 30 in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court after being indicted Wednesday in connection to the shooting death of a dog.
Jermell Williams, 20, of Jackson Street, faces charges of trespass in a habitation when a person is present or likely to be present with firearm specification and prohibitions concerning companion animals, both felonies, and a misdemeanor charge of prohibitions concerning companion animals.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred June 14. Then, Warren police responded just before 11 p.m. to a disturbance at an apartment complex in the 400 block of Southern Boulevard NW after reports of yelling and a gunshot.
As officers approached the building, a woman informed them a dog had been shot on the second floor.
Upon entering the building, officers encountered a group of people gathered around a bleeding pitbull. The dog, still breathing, appeared tso have been shot in the head, according to a report. The dog’s owner told police a man tried to force his way into her apartment before shooting her dog. She said after hearing a loud knock, she opened the door to find a man who attempted to push inside, the report states. As she struggled to keep him out, her dog rushed into the hallway, barking, but not biting the intruder. The man then pulled a gun from his waistband and shot the dog before leaving, the report states.
Unable to transport the dog to a veterinarian, dispatch called Jason Cook, president of Healthy Hearts and Paws, who helped carry the injured animal to his car. Officers found a 9mm shell casing under the dog, which was later secured as evidence, the report states.
