Bond set at $100K for man involved in several crashes
YOUNGSTOWN — A man accused of two counts of felonious assault in connection to an episode Thursday in which several vehicles were crashed into and people hurt while a driver fled from police is scheduled to return to court Wednesday.
Scott L. Pelton Jr., 27, who also faces a charge of child endangering, remains in the Mahoning County jail on $100,000 bond, which was set during his arraignment Friday in Youngstown Municipal Court.
Several people were taken to the hospital after they were involved in crashes involving a driver in a U-Haul fleeing Pulaski Township, Pa., police into Youngstown’s East Side just before 7 p.m. Thursday.
Youngstown officers were asked to respond to McCartney Road after the driver reportedly crashed the truck he was driving into the other motorists.
When Youngstown officers arrived, Pulaski, Campbell and Coitsville police were holding a man at gunpoint. A Youngstown officer removed the man from the truck and took him into custody.
Youngstown officers learned the driver struck vehicles on McCartney Road, struck a pole in front of 2080 McCartney Road and damaged about six vehicles in the car lot at 2080 McCartney Road, the report states.
Additional ambulances were needed to handle the injured people in the vehicles, including two juveniles from a church van that was headed to Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley at the time of the crash, the report states. The van’s driver also was taken to the hospital.
More than 30 scrap tires were inside the U-Haul, the report states.
Pelton also faces several charges related to the incidents in Pulaski Township, according to Pennsylvania court records. They are felony fleeing and attempting to elude an officer and misdemeanor charges of accident involving damage, DUI and recklessly endangering another person.
According to WPXI, a Pittsburgh television station, a motorist rear-ended a vehicle in Pulaski Township about 6:40 p.m. Thursday and drove away. The victim followed the truck into a feed store parking lot.
When police arrived, the driver tried to leave, nearly striking an officer and a patrol car and hitting the feed store, causing “significant damage” to the building, the TV station reported. Instead of listening to officer commands to shut the truck off and get out of the vehicle, police say the driver sped off, and a chase ensued.
Pelton, who has addresses in Boardman, Bazetta and Braceville, faces unrelated charges of engaging in prostitution, possessing criminal tools and drug possession in Boardman court. He is due back to court on those charges Dec. 5.
