County projects to overhaul Poland’s Walker Mill neighborhood
Sewer line, bridge to be replaced
POLAND — Residents can expect to see plenty of heavy machinery along Walker Mill Road for much of the coming year, when the road is not closed.
A sanitary line replacement is already underway along Burgess Run and a bridge replacement is set to begin in the spring.
Mahoning County Commissioner Anthony Traficanti said the Burgess Run project is valued at $634,000, while the Walker Mill bridge project is valued at $1.3 million. Both projects are funded by the county.
County Engineer Pat Ginnetti said the Burgess Run project involves replacing 1,400 feet of pipe that has reached the end of its useful life. Bova Excavating of Struthers was awarded the project through a county bidding process.
Bidding for the Walker Mill project opens Dec. 18, Ginnetti said, and the winning contractor will have roughly seven months to complete the project.
He said the three-span concrete bridge was built in 1925 and needs to be replaced.
The existing bridge is 80 feet long, 24 feet, 6 inches wide, while the new single-span bridge will be 100 feet long, 32 feet wide, and made of steel plate girders with a concrete composite deck.
Ginnetti said Walker Mill will be closed to through traffic during the project.
The road will be closed during the project. The detour will be South Avenue to Western Reserve Road to North Lima Road.
This week, a crew from Mortimer Excavating of West Middlesex, Pa., was working along Walker Mill as well. Ginnetti said the crew was working for Aqua Ohio to relocate an existing waterline.
