Deer removed this season reaches 168
YOUNGSTOWN — U.S. Department of Agriculture sharpshooters removed another 21 deer Oct. 28 in Mill Creek Park, reaching a total of 75 deer removed using that method.
It’s the number approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Nick Derico, natural resources manager for the Mill Creek MetroParks, provided those statistics Tuesday and confirmed that the MetroParks has no plans to ask permission to have sharpshooters remove additional deer this season, which extends into 2025.
Meanwhile, archery hunters selected through the ODNR lottery system killed another 13 deer the week of Oct. 20 to Oct. 26 in various parks within the Mill Creek MetroParks, 19 the week of Oct. 27 to Nov. 2, and another 10 deer last week, Derico stated in an email.
The parks where the archery hunts are taking place are Hitchcock Woods, Huntington Woods, Springfield Forest, Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, Collier Preserve, Vickers Nature Preserve, Sawmill Creek Preserve, MetroParks Farm and Hawkins Marsh.
It brings the total unconfirmed number of deer killed by hunters this season to 93 and an unconfirmed total using both methods to 168 so far this fall, Derico stated. The MetroParks removed 204 using both methods last year.
Derico said the figures are unconfirmed because some of the numbers are still unverified, and there “will likely be changes” in the total.
The number removed as of Oct. 22 was 105 — 51 by archery hunters and 54 by USDA-employed sharpshooters. The number killed by archery hunters was 10 the first week, 35 the second week and six the third week.
