Fleeing driver in U-Haul truck crashes into vehicles, injuring four
YOUNGSTOWN — Several people were sent to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital Thursday night for injuries they received in crashes involving a man fleeing from Pulaski Township, Pa., police into Youngstown.
The fleeing driver was going to be charged with several offenses after crashing a U-Haul truck into other vehicles on McCartney Road on the East Side, according to a Youngstown police report.
Youngstown officers responded to McCartney Road at Coitsville Road for a 6:55 p.m. call to assist Pulaski, Pa., police, who chased a suspect into Youngstown.
When Youngstown officers arrived, Pulaski, Campbell and Coitsville police were holding the suspect at gunpoint. A Youngstown officer removed the driver from the truck and took him into custody.
A Pulaski officer told a Youngstown officer the chase started in Pulaski Township and “carried … over to Youngstown due to (the U-Haul driver) crashing into other vehicles and almost hitting” the cruiser of the Pulaski officer, the report states.
Youngstown officers learned that the driver struck vehicles on McCartney Road, struck a pole in front of 2080 McCartney Road and damaged about six vehicles in the car lot at 2080 McCartney Road, the report states.
Additional ambulances were needed to handle the injured people in the vehicles, including two juveniles from a church van that was headed to Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley at the time of the crash, the report states. The van’s driver also was taken to the hospital.
The van, U-Haul truck and another vehicle were towed from the scene, the report states. A Youngstown police officer followed the ambulance taking the U-Haul driver to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
More than 30 scrap tires were inside the U-Haul, the report states. Officers and prosecutors were discussing the filing of charges against the U-Haul driver, but none were on file in Youngstown Municipal Court as of Friday afternoon.
