Man charged after allegedly forcing car into I-680 median
YOUNGSTOWN — A 40-year-old Barberton man was taken to the Mahoning County jail Monday after a 6:57 p.m. incident Sunday in which he is accused of grabbing the steering wheel of his girlfriend’s car and purposely driving it into the median on Interstate 680.
Bradley Sheridan was charged Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court with misdemeanor assault and pleaded not guilty.
He returns to court for a pretrial at 11 a.m. Nov. 13.
He was released from the jail later Monday.
Youngstown police were called to I-680 west of downtown for a single-vehicle crash and found the woman and her vehicle. She said she was driving her Honda Accord to take the man, later identified as Sheridan, home to Barberton when an argument began, according to the police report.
The woman said the argument was over him wanting a ride home and her not wanting to transport him.
She said Sheridan told her he would kill her cat.
The argument continued until they got close to Belle Vista Avenue, she said.
She said Sheridan slapped her on the right cheek with his left hand, then intentionally forced her car into the concrete median, the report states.
The officer investigating the crash saw tire marks on the road showing where the vehicle proceeded from the outside lane to a location on the median wall, which damaged the front of the vehicle, which then spun around and the rear bumper also struck the median, the report states.
The vehicle was towed from the scene and sustained heavy damage.
The woman told the officer the man ran into the woods and described the gray sweatpants, gray hooded sweatshirt and hat he was wearing. Other officers were asked to watch for him, but they did not locate him, the report states.
After gathering information for a report, the investigating officer drove around looking for Sheridan and spotted him at Mahoning and Glenwood avenues and took him into custody.
Sheridan said he had a headache from the accident, so he was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
He was taken to jail when he left the hospital, the report states.
