Man charged with felonious assault after gunfire, chase on South Side

YOUNGSTOWN — Dwan Jones, 47, was arraigned Friday in Youngstown Municipal Court on charges of felonious assault and discharging a firearm in the city limits stemming from a 3:31 a.m. Friday disturbance on West Myrtle Avenue in which Jones is accused of chasing a woman and shooting a gun. The woman was not hit.

Police were called about a man chasing a woman and firing a gun. When an officer arrived, he saw Jones walking alongside West Myrtle Avenue, staggering and repeating several sentences.

The officer ordered Jones to show his hands and put them on top of his head, but Jones did not initially obey commands. When he did comply, an officer found a handgun in Jones’ pants pocket, according to a police report.

Jones was placed in a police cruiser while officers investigated. The woman said Jones got mad when she telephoned a man. According to police, Jones pulled out a gun and fired it. She fled on foot, but she could hear Jones yelling at her as he fired two more shots, the report states.

Officers found a “drum style magazine” containing ammunition and two spent bullet casings. A neighbor told police he or she heard yelling and two gunshots.

Police arrested Jones and charged him with felonious assault. He will return to court Nov. 14 for a preliminary hearing.
