Man evaluated several times in hotel encounter sentenced
YOUNGSTOWN — Richard J. Armstrong Jr., 46, who has had numerous psychological evaluations after being charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault in a 2020 Boardman hotel incident, was sentenced to five to six years in prison Monday.
Prosecutors asked last month that Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Anthony D’Apolito give Armstrong six to seven-and-half years in prison, but the judge told Armstrong he would give him five to six years as long as Armstrong did not commit violations while waiting for sentencing.
The judge also warned Armstrong, formerly of Youngstown, that he will be on reporting probation for 18 months to three years after he leaves prison and could go back to prison for two-and-a-half years if he fails to abide by the conditions of his probation.
Armstrong gets credit for four years and three months in custody while awaiting trial, so he could be out in about nine months.
Armstrong’s charges were filed after he followed a man into the Days Inn in Boardman and forced him into his hotel room at gunpoint.
A Boardman police report stated that the victim told police Armstrong had two pistols pointed at his head. The victim offered Armstrong money, but Armstrong did not take any. Eventually, the victim was able to leave the hotel room and contact Boardman police.
Armstrong pleaded guilty in October to robbery, felonious assault and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Other charges he faced were dismissed in exchange for his plea.
