Rotary asks Canf ield Township to help fund Lighting of the Green

CANFIELD TOWNSHIP — The Canfield Rotary hopes trustees will play Santa Claus by helping to fund its annual Lighting of the Green event.

At Tuesday’s trustees meeting, Canfield Rotarian Anthony Nacarato, who chairs the lighting event, asked for some financial assistance with this year’s holiday decorations.

“I am here asking a favor,” he said. “This year we have incurred additional expenses and would like some help.”

He told trustees that in past years, the city placed wreaths on the lamp posts around the village green. He said the wreaths may have been from as far back as the 1960s. The old wreaths were given to Youngstown for use on light poles along Market Street.

“Last year, we replaced the wreaths with live garland, but, by Christmas, it was dying and looked terrible. This year, we have moved to purchase artificial garland with LED lighting,” Nacarato said.

He said the new garland costs almost $4,000 but can be used for many years. Nacarato attended the city meeting last week to ask for help, and he said he thought the township also could help.

“Any donation will be greatly appreciated,” he said.

Trustee Brian Governor said it will have to be discussed.

Nacarato also requested use of township hall for Santa’s arrival Nov. 30. The evening event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the Lighting of the Green, and at 7 p.m. Santa will arrive and take his seat in to greet children.

“We moved it back and are hoping to catch some travelers coming home for the holidays,” Nacarato said.
