Schools to share $2.2M grant for mental health services
NILES — The Trumbull County Educational Service Center has formed a partnership with Kent State University, made possible by a $2.279 million five-year grant.
This collaboration aims to enhance mental health services in schools served by the TCESC, focusing on districts that meet specific criteria, including chronic absenteeism rates, the number of economically disadvantaged students and the ratio of school psychologists to students.
The “NorthEast Ohio Helpers: Building Capacity for Inclusive Mental Health Services” initiative will provide full scholarships and cost-of-living stipends to school psychology trainees committed to serving these districts. By equipping them with the necessary skills and experience, the program will increase the availability of school psychological services for students.
Building a Strong Foundation for Student Support Trainees will engage in practical experiences within TCESC cooperative schools, working on assessments, implementing evidence-based interventions and collaborating with educators to promote student well-being. This model not only prepares these future professionals but also encourages them to remain in the community after completing their training, fostering lasting support for students.
Kent State Universit has been training school psychologists since 1947. This initiative continues Kent State’s tradition of preparing professionals to meet the needs of local communities.
