St. Joseph Hospital turns 100
WARREN — It was in 1924 when Dr. Chester Waller decided to entrust what was then known as Riverside Hospital to the care of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, leading to 100 years of health care and compassion.
On Tuesday, the sisters, Youngstown Catholic Diocese officials and staff, and members of the community celebrated the 100th anniversary of what is now known as St. Joseph Warren Hospital on Eastland Avenue SE. It was known as St. Joseph Riverside Hospital when it was located on Tod Avenue NW — a name the Sisters of the Humility of Mary gave it on Nov. 26, 1924, when they purchased it after Waller died six months after founding it.
The hospital is one of three in the Valley now owned by Bon Secours-Mercy Health. The other two are St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital near downtown and St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital on Market Street in Boardman. There also are dozens of satellite locations, free-standing clinics and doctor’s offices under the Mercy Health-Youngstown umbrella.
To help mark the 100th anniversary, a time capsule was buried in the hospital’s healing garden over the summer. The capsule contained an ink pen, a laminated logo sticker, a golf outing registration form and golf ball, a centennial name badge clip, a copy of the hospital’s newsletters, a pill box, an April 13, 1924, laminated copy of a Warren Tribune headline, a letter opener and a paperweight.
St. Joseph Warren Hospital employs more than 900 people in various jobs.
One of the first ways the hospital marked the milestone was by opening a memorabilia room in January in the main lobby of the hospital on Eastland Avenue. The memorabilia room is open to the public weekdays during regular business hours.
