Support surges for Trump in Mahoning Valley
President-elect Donald Trump not only ran up the vote totals in rural communities in Mahoning and Trumbull counties during his historic victory, but he won in formerly reliable Democratic areas such as Austintown, Struthers, Niles and Hubbard.
Trump, a Republican, beat Democrat Kamala Harris in Ohio 55.2% to 43.9%, winning the state for a third consecutive election, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s election. The final results, including uncounted votes, will be certified by Nov. 20.
Trump’s percentages were better in Trumbull County than the state on his way to winning the county for the third time – something no Republican has ever done. Trump received 57.6% of the Trumbull vote to 41% for Harris.
Trump also won Mahoning County for the second consecutive time — the first Republican to do so since Herbert Hoover in 1928 and 1932. Trump received 54.1% of the vote to 44.7% for Harris.
Trump won 140 of Mahoning County’s 212 precincts and 120 of Trumbull’s 158 precincts.
In Mahoning County, Trump won every community except Youngstown and Campbell as he did during the 2020 election against Democrat Joe Biden. In the 2016 election against Democrat Hillary Clinton, Trump won every community in Mahoning except Youngstown, Campbell, Austintown and Struthers.
In Trumbull County, Trump won every community this year except Warren, Girard and Liberty. His margin of defeat in those three communities shrunk from the 2020 election. He lost Girard by only 184 votes — 2,179 to 1,995 — and Liberty by 261 votes — 3,159 to 2,902 — in this election. In 2020, he lost Girard by 559 votes and Liberty by 727.
In the 2020 election, Trump won every Trumbull County community except Warren, Niles, Girard and Liberty. He lost those four communities in 2016, along with McDonald.
In this election, Trump won Niles 4,150 to 3,658 and captured 11 of its 13 precincts.
Trump got 41% of the vote in Warren, the most-populous community in Trumbull County and a Democratic stronghold, up from 39% when he ran in 2020. Trump won three of the city’s 26 precincts in this election and received 5,671 votes in Warren.
Of Harris’ 38,839 votes in Trumbull County, 7,465 came from Warren. That’s 19% of her total vote in the county. Biden got 20% of his total Trumbull vote in 2020 from Warren and Clinton received 22% of her total Trumbull vote from the city in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump lost only four other precincts in Trumbull besides the ones in Warren, Girard and Liberty. He lost two in Niles and one each in Brookfield and Warren Township.
Support for Harris in Youngstown, Mahoning County’s most-populous city, declined from what Biden got in 2020 and what Clinton received in 2016.
Harris won all 45 of Youngstown’s precincts, and received 13,284 votes to 5,671 for Trump.
Trump got nearly 30% of Youngstown’s vote.
In the 2020 election, Trump got about 25% of the vote with Biden capturing 16,059 votes in Youngstown compared to 5,534 for Trump. Trump’s total votes in Youngstown increased by 137, but Harris had 2,775 less votes than Biden did four years earlier in the city.
The Democratic Party decline in Youngstown is even more significant compared with 2016 when Clinton received 18,499 votes to 5,207 for Trump. Trump got 22% of Youngstown’s vote in 2016. Also, more than 4,700 Youngstown residents voted in 2016 compared with this year.
Of Harris’ 49,811 votes in Mahoning County, Youngstown accounted for about 27% of that total. That’s about the same percentage as Biden received in 2020. Youngstown made up 32% of Clinton’s total Mahoning County vote in 2016.
In the two counties, Boardman provided Trump with the most votes, 11,503, with him winning 26 of the township’s 37 precincts.
Besides Youngstown, Boardman also provided Harris with the most votes in the two counties at 10,010.
Austintown delivered the second-highest vote number for Trump at 9,640 and the third-highest for Harris at 8,235. Trump won 26 of the township’s 33 precincts.
Outside of Youngstown and Campbell, Trump lost 20 precincts in Mahoning County. Of those 20, 11 were in Boardman, seven in Austintown and one each in Sebring and Lowellville.
Trump lost seven of Campbell’s nine precincts and Harris won the city 1,802 to 1,341.
Trump again won Struthers, but by a larger margin even though he received only 10 more votes than four years ago. In this election, Trump received 2,416 votes in Struthers to 1,875 for Harris. In comparison, Trump got 2,406 votes in Struthers in 2020 to 2,271 for Harris.
Mahoning County Republican Chairman Tom McCabe said the party will work to recruit candidates in Struthers for next year’s municipal election.
“We win in Struthers so we will definitely work to get candidates on the ballot there,” he said.
Every elected city official in Struthers is a Democrat.
With Trump winning the city of Hubbard, 2,352 to 1,728, as well as his success in Niles, a close race in Girard and inroads in Warren, Marleah Campbell, Trumbull County Republican Party secretary, said the party would focus on next year’s partisan elections in those cities.
“We are looking to run candidates in municipal elections,” she said. “We are working to find qualified candidates to run in Warren, Girard, Niles and Hubbard.”
Every elected official in the four cities — except Hubbard council President William J. Williams, who ran as a write-in last year — is Democratic.
Trump won Lowellville 278 to 241 and McDonald 951 to 792 in relatively close contests.
Trump scored big wins in the less-populated communities of Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
Trump won Howland 5,625 to 4,055, Cortland 2,475 to 1,609, Bazetta 2,273 to 1,234, Brookfield 2,611 to 1,545, Champion 3,210 to 1,829, Hubbard Township 1,780 to 1,043, Lordstown 1,239 to 642, Newton Falls 1,181 to 744 and Weathersfield 2,308 to 1,493.
In Mahoning, Trump won Beaver 3,123 to 1,509, Canfield city 2,935 to 1,924, Canfield Township 4,101 to 1,985, Jackson 847 to 344, Milton 1,070 to 468, Poland Township 5,010 to 2,932, Poland village 947 to 613, Sebring 1,106 to 625, and Springfield 2,712 to 1,181.
The president-elect’s numbers in the rural parts of the two counties were his strongest.
In Mahoning County, Trump won Beloit 293 to 98, Berlin 931 to 324, Coitsville 478 to 283, Craig Beach 307 to 198, Ellsworth 1,038 to 336, Goshen 1,325 to 350, Green 1,391 to 488, New Middletown 543 to 329, Smith 1,226 to 319, and Washingtonville 95 to 58.
In Trumbull County, he won Bloomfield 328 to 83, Braceville 900 to 416, Bristol 1,083 to 354, Farmington 488 to 156, Fowler 1,050 to 342, Greene 336 to 94, Gustavus 335 to 157, Hartford 889 to 313, Johnston 740 to 248, Kinsman 749 to 259, Mecca 971 to 324, Mesopotamia 292 to 80, Newton 1,396 to 621, Southington 1,309 to 492, Vernon 507 to 185, Warren Township 1,238 to 765, and West Farmington 153 to 32.
