Boy suffers gunshot wounds on South Ave.

Victim, suspect are students at Wilson Alternative School, district confirms

YOUNGSTOWN — A boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries when the child was shot Tuesday afternoon on the South Side.

The child was found with gunshot wounds in the 2700 block of South Avenue near the Marmion Avenue intersection. A blood stain is located in front of a storefront with two bullet holes in the front door in a busy plaza.

A person still at the scene after a Youngstown police detective left said it appeared to be a child walking home from school, an argument and a person in a car. He said the bullet holes in the glass on the front of the plaza were not there a day or so ago, so they might be related to the gunfire.

Capt. Jason Simon of the Youngstown Police Department Detective Division confirmed the 2:15 p.m. shooting and said the boy’s injuries are not life threatening.

The parking lot is about a block west of the Wilson Alternative School on Gibson Avenue. That is a school for students in grades 3 through 12, according to the website for the school, which is part of the Youngstown City School District.

School district spokeswoman Stacy Quinones released the following statement on behalf of the district:

“Youngstown City Schools is deeply saddened by the recent shooting involving two scholars from Wilson Alternative School and Virtual Academy that occurred not at the school and away from the school property on Tuesday (December 17). One scholar was injured but is expected to recover. As this matter is currently under investigation, we are unable to provide specific details at this time. It is not believed the gun was with the alleged shooter during school, as they passed through the metal detector. Additionally, there was no fight between the two individuals at school.

“Violence has no place in our district or our community. YCSD is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all our scholars and staff, and counseling services are available to them to address any emotional needs. The safety and well-being of our scholars remain our top priority, and we will continue to work closely with law enforcement to address this matter effectively. Our thoughts and well wishes are with the scholars and families affected by this tragic event.”
