2nd suspect apprehended in killing in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — On Wednesday, the same day Terry Hopkins, 22, was taken into custody on a charge of complicity to murder in the Jan. 24 killing of Resean Graham, 42, on Griselda Avenue, his co-defendant, Kenneth Carter, 34, was arraigned in Youngstown Municipal Court.

A Youngstown police news release about Hopkins’ arrest states that there is “still additional work to be done” in the case, so additional details are not being released, but the release thanked Youngstown detectives Philip Skowron and George Anderson, “who have been working this case tirelessly since it occurred.” The release also thanked the “U.S. Marshals for their assistance in apprehending one of the suspects.”

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Carter Monday as he was walking in the parking lot of Youngstown Municipal Court with his attorney, David Betras, for a hearing in another criminal case there — a low-level felony drug possession charge also filed Monday.

The Marshals Service took Carter into custody and then took him to the Mahoning County jail. On Wednesday, Carter was arraigned on the drug-possession charge and the same complicity to murder charge Hopkins now faces.

There is no arraignment date on file yet for Hopkins, but Youngstown Municipal Court records show the charge contains the same possible penalty as Carter’s charge — 15 years to life in prison if convicted.

At Carter’s arraignment, Youngstown Prosecutor Kathy Thompson asked for bond to be set at $1 million because of the case being a murder and because Carter’s history in other criminal cases includes having a warrant issued for his arrest over two years ago.

Thompson mentioned that Carter was coming to court on the drug case Monday when he was arrested in the homicide case.

Betras said that if Youngstown detectives would have informed Betras of the warrant, “I would have taken him right over to the detective bureau. We were walking into court and four marshals came out of nowhere and surrounded me and my client. It was very shocking for me. I think a million is too high,” Betras said, and asked for a $100,000 bond.

He said Carter “lives in the area and has property in the area.” Betras also said he thinks a lower bond is appropriate because of “the quality of the evidence. All we have is a blanket allegation of complicity to commit murder. I know they don’t have a confession. The detective told me they are still working on the case.”

Thompson told Magistrate Meghan Brundege that Carter was arrested Monday “in a matter of hours” after the warrant for Carter’s arrest was issued.

The magistrate set bond at $750,000 in the complicity to murder case and set a preliminary hearing for 9 a.m. Feb. 5 in both of Carter’s cases.

Youngstown officers were called to Griselda Avenue on the South Side at 7:36 p.m. Friday for a person who was shot, according to a news release. Officers saw the man lying near the front doorway with multiple gunshot wounds to the body and began life-saving measures until the arrival of ambulance personnel. However, the man died at the scene.

It was the second homicide in the city this year with the first being the late Jan. 10 shooting death of Brandon Ogden, 27, who was found in the 2500 block of Ohio Avenue on the North Side after police were called there shortly after 11 p.m. for a man who had been shot and a suspect who fled.
